Report on Imperialism in Africa
European imperialism was a two-faced guest in Africa. The imposition brought economic expansion and positive social programs to the overtaken countries. It also meant brutal exploitation and dehumanization to entire populations. Conflicts between foreign cultures and social structures resulted in a complete disruption of native African life.
Directions:
The class will be divided into four groups. Each group will write a report on their assigned section. The section reports will then be used by a group of students, selected by the class, to write and present a final report. The section reports will be used as study guides for the written assessment. The final report will serve as a study guide for the second semester final exam.
Using our textbook and researching the web sites provided and taking notes on each section focus, begin the writing portion of this assignment by writing a draft of your assigned section. Section reviews must include:
- Analyze the reasons that countries gained control of territory through imperialism and the impact on people living in the territory that was controlled.
- Exploitation of African resources
- Political, economic and social roots
- Impact on people living in the territory that was controlled
- Consequences of oppression, discrimination, and conflict between cultures.
Using either a word-processing program or pencil and paper write draft paragraphs on each topic.
Before you begin writing a draft of your section, review and use the following writing process that can be found at .
Once you have corrected your section draft, use a word processing program to write the final report of your section. The final report will be written by a group of classmates chosen by the class. This fifth and final summary section will reinforce the main points of the each section report.

Why? and
How?
Information and design of section reports and the final report will be based in Social Studies Skills and Methods Thinking and Organizing section described at the top of this page.
Grading:
The section report will be graded on how well it:
addresses theSocial Studies Skills and Methods
answers questions readers might have and
how well it prepares our class for the written test.
Those students selected(no more than 4) to write the final paper will not take the written test. The final paper will be worth 100 points. The grading of the final paper will follow the same guidelines as the section report as well as how closely the report follows the guidelines as outlined inwriting process link.
Written test:
Those students not selected to write the final paper will write a summary describing two of the above sections. Neither of your selections can be the one you worked on.
Section reviews (assessment) will be worth 50 points each. They must include:
Analyze the reasons that countries gained control of territory through imperialism and the impact on people living in the territory that was controlled.
Exploitation of African resources

impact on people living in the territory that was controlled
consequences of oppression, discrimination and conflict between cultures.
