Urban Kulture – Hip Hop Summer Program for Youth

July 2014 at Arts Continuing Education, MacEwan University

A first in Canada, MacEwan University is offering youth aged 13 and up a unique Hip Hop program with workshops in Deejaying, Rap/Emcee, and Urban Art with B-Boy/B-Girl and Hip Hop dance. These workshops are a unique opportunity to explore hip hop and use creative skills in art, writing, music and movement.

The Urban Kulture program will be highlighted at the first outdoor City Market of the season on May 17th downtown. DJ Dice, Dre, Sean Arceta and the United1ne crew will perform from 11 am – 2 pm at the 104th street market with deejaying, rap/emcee, b-boy/b-girl hip hop and urban dance.

The professional artists instructing in our summer program are performers, producers and activists for hip hop as a powerful art form. With a great learning environment, small hands-on classes and performance opportunities, this will be a great summer experience.

Our summer program was inspired by the 2013 Hip Hop Heads symposium organized by Michael MacDonald, Associate Professor in the Music program at MacEwan, and the positive work done by artists from the Hip Hop Preservation Society and Cipher5 Hip Hop Circle which promote the positive potential for hip hop to create environments and activities which engage youth with creative expression, communication and self-actualization. Many of the Urban Kulture instructors have roots in MacEwan University either as instructors, graduates, students or consultants.
