Syllabus/Procedures for AP Calculus Class- Ms. Tran

1. Math book: Finney “Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic” (bring this to class EVERY day unless we have a class set)

2.  One 3-ring notebook (for notes, homework, and returned assessments NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS OR LOOSE PAPERS ACCEPTED)

3.  Pencil, 6-inch ruler, and graph paper (pen will be used for grading/correcting only)

4.  Graphing Calculator (“TI 83 or 84”) and scientific calculator (TI 30XS or TI 30Xa or TI 30X IIS)

Grades/grade Calculation for Calculus AB/AP

a)  GRADES: 90% is the lowest “A”, less than 90% to 80% is a “B”, less than 80% to 70% is a “C”, less than 70% to 60% is a “D”, less than 60% is a “F”

b)  Tests (70% of grade [excluding the final] with NO re-takes): multiply your test average percentage by 7

c)  Quizzes (20% of grade [excluding the final] with NO re-takes): multiply your quiz average percentage by 2

d)  Homework percentage (10% of grade [excluding the final]): average is the number of complete (from in class checks), corrected assignments plus warm-up percentages ¸ the total number of assignments & warm-ups (times 100) [homework is graded on completeness (with an honest effort), proper work, and pictures (when applicable) (must have name, page #, and problem #s on each assignment). Assignments will be posted on Edlio. NO LATE WORK OR PARTIAL CREDIT!

e)  Final: 1/6 of semester grade (think of it as 200 points)

f)  add up the numbers from b, c, d, and e for your grade (ex 959 is out of 1200 which is a 79% or C)

g)  GRADES WILL NOT BE ROUNDED (ex 89.999999999999999999999999999999% is a “B”)

Additional items of note:

i.  “warm-ups” (homework quizzes) count as homework assignments

ii.  at the end of the grading period (each of the 1st 3 quarters) the notes notebook (all notes must be dated with name on each page) will be checked to replace the students worst QUIZ with a possible 100% (this should also include all returned assessments)

iii.  cheating policy and all school rules will be strictly enforced!

iv.  no food or drinks (except water) allowed in class or MP 3 players (or other electronic devices) or headphones

v.  KEEP MOBILE PHONES OFF AND PUT AWAY!

vi.  Absences in the month of April can have a negative effect on your grade!

vii.  in the case of an absence, the STUDENT is responsible for all make-up notes/homework/assessments (make-ups MUST be complete on time or they are recorded as 0- if you miss 1 day you have 1 day to complete work etc)

viii.  make-up tests/quizzes are NOT the same as the original test/quiz

ix.  THE AP EXAM IS MANDATORY FOR ALL STUDENTS

x.  The grade received in AP Calculus is a reflection of the score that should be expected on the AP exam (“A”= 5, “B”= 4, “C”= 3, etc.). If a student “outperforms” their letter grade (4 or 5 only) I will increase their grade a maximum of 2 letter grades for a 5, one letter grade (not to exceed a “B”) for a 4. Students must email me BEFORE AUGUST 1st in order to receive a grade change.

xi.  2 points will be deducted each day for forgotten materials (1-4 above)
