Dear Families,

Room 81 super heroes are flexing their science muscles!

Science – What are the forces that affect a parachute? Ask your third grader to share what kind of parachutes help people get safely to the ground. The forces discussed with this science investigation included drag and gravity.

The students also explored cloud formation. They researched, discussed, modeled and recorded “What makes a cloud?” The students made models of three basic cloud formations and included them in an informational book.

Reading - Summarizing stories and asking questions pertaining to “point of view”

Writing - Students enjoyed identifying a variety of closing techniques in their classmate’s stories and experimenting with different ending choices in their own pieces. Asking a question or sharing a hope, feeling or conclusion.

Social Studies - Thank you to Mr. Smith and Mrs. Powell for sharing their experiences, artifacts and photos on Japanese culture. The students used classroom literature and technology to make connections with our guest speakers.

Opportunities

·  Quarters continue to be collected during the month of November to help support the Centre House shelter.

·  Please consider contributing one can of pie filling towards the Food Bank’s Holiday Meal Bag Project. The informational letter is attached.

·  Operation Gratitude – Please take a moment to read the attached letter regarding a thank you for our service men and women. https://opgrat.wordpress.com/2013/08/01/take-time-to-say-thank-you-for-serving/

Thank you for your consideration of this wonderful opportunity! I am especially looking forward to your child’s letters and cards, as I know that they will brighten the world of our dedicated service members!

Although we have not assigned homework this week please continue to encourage your child to read at least 15 minutes every day. In addition to their library reading selections they have chosen a new “book club” book to enjoy over the holiday break. The book club conversations offer great opportunities to share in conversations related to inferences, plot, vocabulary, evidence from text and different points-of-view.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dillon and Miss Wright
