ESL Tutoring Services

Student Learning Outcome(s):

1. Students will have a better understanding of the subject matter, improve their language skills, and be more motivated.

As assessed by: an anonymous student feedback questionnaire (see attached).

2. The ESL department will use information gathered from tutoring to inform decisions on curriculum, instruction, and ways to improve the tutoring services.

As assessed by: the tutoring reports (see attached).

Report from Spring 2006

A student feedback system was initiated in which the student is given an anonymous “tutoring evaluation form” that asks questions about whether tutoring has helped his/her understanding of the material, language skill development, and motivation for doing well in class. The questions are answered on a Likert scale of 1 to 5, in which 1 means “strongly disagree” and 5 means “strongly agree.” The evaluation results from Spring 2006 for the program as a whole are shown below.

The tutor answered your questions and explained things in a way that you could understand. / 4.68
Tutoring has helped you better understand the subject matter. / 4.68
Tutoring has helped improve your language skills. / 4.59
Tutoring has helped motivate you to do better work in your class. / 4.64
You would use this tutor again and/or recommend this tutor to a friend. / 4.74

The data show that our tutoring program is well regarded by the students it serves, with each question receiving at least a 4.59 on the 1-to-5 scale. The same data are recorded for each tutor as a measure of quality control in tutor performance. As the data show, student confidence in our tutoring staff is high (4.74).
