Learning Outcomes
By completing this task students will be able to:
- Use their research skills to locate occupational information.
- Use occupational information to compare and contrast occupations.
- Develop and understanding of the World Of Work.
Preparation and Materials
- Copies of Activity Sheets 1, 2 and 3 “Job Studies” for each student.
- Teachers’ Notes for reference.
- Possible access to computers for students.
- Access to appropriate careers information relating to the jobs listed on Activity Sheet 1 – see Teachers Notes.
Method
- Explain the aim of the activity in student-friendly language with reference to the learning outcomes above.
- Give out Activity Sheets 1 and 2 and ask the students to work in pairs to select a job from the list provided, and use the careers information to answer the questions about their chosen job. Provide adult support where necessary.
- Give out Activity Sheet 3. Ask the students as a class to look for similarities and differences between jobs by playing “Happy Families” game on Activity Sheet 3.
- Ask the students what they have learned form the activity.
- Summarise the main learning outcomes.
Extension Activity
- The completed Activity Sheets can be displayed for future reference after checking against available careers information.
- Ask the students to carry out one or more additional job studies.

Useful Careers Information Resources
- Any occupational information in picture form.
Differentiation Ideas
- Find pictures of the jobs listed on Activity Sheet 1 – or a selection of the jobs. Spread these out on a table and allow the students to choose a job to research.
- Some students may need considerable help to research their chosen job. It may be helpful to invite a Careers Councilor/adviser, if you have one to the lesson to support the students.
- Some students may find it easier to listen to details about their chosen job and provide answers to the questions on Activity Sheet 2 orally.
- Students may like to stick a photo/picture onto Activity Sheet 2 to remind them which job is being investigated.
