UC Information Literacy Website/Wiki Proposal

March 2007

The Heads of Public Service Information Literacy Common Interest Group (HOPS IL CIG) was charged with drafting a proposal for an external website for University of California Information Literacy information in July of 2004. As technology has developed and the charge of the CIG evolved we feel that it is necessary to revisit the original proposal and amend it to our current needs. The purpose, audience and sections are virtually unchanged from the pervious document, the main change is the way in which the information is accessed and marketed to other UC Librarians.

From the original Proposal: Part of the charge was to make recommendations on how to handle three existing Information Literacy websites:

  1. A SOPAG-created site: <
  2. A site created by Debbie Murphy as a place-holder for a more permanent site while the topic of information literacy was being discussed by LAUC:

(This was last updated July 2, 2003)

  1. A site created by the LAUC Information Literacy Task Force, and voted by LAUC to turn over to HOPS: < Updated 6/17/03 by Sarah McDaniel)

From the current HOPS ILCIG page are currently 3 sites that house information for the ILCIG, and a fourth IL-CIG Wiki:

  1. HOPS
  2. Information Literacy: What the UC Libraries Are Doing
  3. Workshop
  4. Wiki

The ILCIG questions the usability of the current site and has reviewed the contents and offers the following suggestions. CIG Members, please help add to this section.

  1. The site “front” still be the SOPAG HOPS IL CIG site ( which would offer basic information and documents related to the CIG and link out to the Wiki.
  2. The information from the What the UC Libraries are Doing? will be imported into the Wiki as well as content pertaining to the Information Literacy movement in the UC system. Members of the IL CIG will have access to edit the Wiki and provided editing access to others on their campus.

Purpose

From the original proposal: The purpose of the new site is to avoid having a static page and allow our audience to subscribe to updates and contribute to the content. This will turn the site into a communication tool for UC instruction/e-learning/reference and other librarians.

The Wiki will have links to key state, national or international information literacy sites and directories that relate to UC information literacy initiatives. The hope would be that in addition to the link there will be commentary from UC Librarians on the use of such sites. The goal is to create a fluid communication tool for UC librarians. It is not intended to compete with National IL Wikis or websites.

Audience (From the original proposal)

The primary audience for the website includes the IL CIG, UC information literacy and instruction librarians and staff, and other UC librarians and staff interested in issues about information literacy.

The secondary audiences include UC faculty, graduate students, and administrators, as well as non-UC librarians who want more information about UC projects, programs, and services in the field.

Content (From the original proposal)

In addition to the selected content from the pre-existing sites, the site will include

  • Links to information and reports related to information literacy on the UC campuses. Information literacy contacts, to be appointed by each campus, will determine materials to be included for each campus.
  • High-level links to key information literacy websites and an overview of the topic as it relates to UC initiatives; not an all-inclusive directory
  • Link to CDL Instructional Materials site:
  • Primary campus information literacy contacts to be determined by each campus
  • News category with monthly updates: Information of interest to our audience (e.g., dates of related conferences, grant deadlines)
  • Review of Assessment tools.
  • Glossary terms specific to IL and instruction.
  • Information on IL/Instruction librarians at various UC campuses.
  • Classroom materials used by UC Librarians.
  • Presentations and papers presented by and written by UC Librarians on IL/Instruction.
  • Comments from other UC Librarians on the items listed above.

Web Site Location

The Wiki will be linked to from the HOPS IL-CIG and hopefully indexed in Google. Maintaining the site at this location provides consistency for users (who see the same base URL and can predict where UC libraries information resides) and a permanent home through turnovers of group chairs and group web editors.

The HOPS IL-CIG will look like this:

Web Editor

It is recommend that a web/wiki editor by appointed within the ILCIG.

Timeline

I would like to begin an immediate migration of information into the

Wiki. And add content as it becomes available. The goal is to have the Wiki go public to the general UC Librarians community in May 2007.

Original proposal compiled by Sarah McDaniel, Ellen Meltzer and Debbie Murphy in July 2004, revised by Michelle Jacobs in March 2007.
