JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:Deputy Electrician

Responsible To:Chief Electrician

Responsible For: TheDeputy Electrician is not directly responsible for staff, however they are expected to assist the Chief Electrician in the supervision and training of the Assistant Electrician and any casuals working within the department.

Purpose of position: To work with theChief Electricianto ensure the effective delivery of all electrical, lighting, sound and AV requirements of all productions for the Octagon Theatre, including in the Main House, Studio and Off Site.

The position requirement to understand lighting programming on EOS family desks and Qlab programming for sound and video playback. The position is also required to operate lighting and sound for live productions, including evenings and weekends.

Main Tasks:

  • Working with the Chief Electrician to determine electrical requirements of all ‘in-house’ productions, and scheduling to ensure that these needs are met.
  • Ensure that all work undertaken is carried out in accordance with Health and Safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Ensure efficient operation of shows, by creating show specific LX and sound check lists for operators following the technical rehearsal.
  • Be instrumental in safe and effective rigging of equipment during turn-rounds, and carry out a thorough rig check prior to all performances.
  • May be required to assist in interval set changes.
  • Set and agreedeadlines for show specific LX requirements with the Chief Electrician.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Electrician,liaise with the Construction Supervisor regarding planning and implementation of scenic electrics for show specific requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Electrician, liaise with the Stage Management department and Props and Scenic Artist regarding the construction and/or necessary adaptation of any electrical props required for each show.
  • Plan equipment preparation and consumable orders from Lighting Designers plans.
  • Prepare any electrical practicals to be used for shows in accordance to Set and Lighting Designers requirements.
  • Liaise and negotiate with any guest Lighting Designers to ensure that the creative requirements are met to the highest standards achievable within the available resources.
  • Attend and represent, where necessary, the department and LX Designers, at production, any other necessary meetings as requested by the Chief Electrician or Head of Production.
  • Work within budgets agreed with the Chief Electrician. To negotiate terms for hire and purchase of equipment as necessary and within allocated resources for productions.
  • To build on existing relationships with local theatres in order to improve contacts for borrowing and loaning equipment.
  • To follow correct procedures when purchasing on company accounts.
  • Liaise with the DSM to establish requirements for working light, cans, and cue lights backstage for each production, and ensure that these needs are met prior to the start of the technical rehearsal.
  • To supervise the work of the Assistant Electrician and any casual workers.
  • To liaise and negotiate with touring companies to facilitate their electrical requirements, and ensure that these fall within available resources.
  • Assisting the Chief Electrician with the electrical maintenance of all sites occupied by the Octagon Theatre Trust Ltd.
  • To ensure that a weekly lamp round is carried out and that the theatre’s lamp stock is maintained.
  • To work with the Chief Electrician to plan and implement a rolling maintenance programme for electrical equipment, including PAT testing schedule and records.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in all sites of work.
  • Alert the Chief Electrician, at the earliest opportunity, of any potential problems in carrying out expected duties.
  • Working in a spirit of collaboration and co-operation with other departments.
  • Work in the best interests of the Octagon and in accordance with company policies, including health and safety, safeguarding and IT.
  • Be an effective representative of the Octagon in all situations and demonstrate the highest level of customer care and service.
  • Carrying out any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Chief Electricianor Head of Production.
  • The main duties and responsibilities are indicative and not-exhaustive. Other duties may be necessary to fulfil the purpose of the post. This job description may be periodically reviewed and revised in consultation with the post-holder.

Other:

  • There is a possibility that theDeputy Electrician would have the opportunity to Design lightingor sound for studio productions and community work where appropriate.
  • This post may involve some driving, and off site work, especially during co-productions, and during the Octagon’s upcoming off site season.
  • The Deputy Electrician will have Fire Evacuation responsibilities.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of working in a professional theatre electrics department, preferably in a producing theatre
  • Aspects of lighting or sound for professional theatre productions, including equipment rigging, focusing, LX desk programming and show operation.
  • Experience of DMX protocol.
  • Maintenance of electrical equipment, both theatrical and domestic

Desirable

  • Programming ETC EOS family desks

UNDERSTANDING/KNOWLEDGE

DEPUTY ELECTRICIAN

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Salary: £18,000 - £20,500 per annum (not including overtime) paid monthly into bank account.

Term: Full time permanent

Hours of Work: The hours are 40 per week. Meal breaks are to be taken outside these hours. For hours worked on Sundays, Bank Holidays and between 11.00 pm and 8.00 am overtime will be payable at double time.For hours in excess of 40overtime shall be payable at time and a half.The working week is Monday to Saturday. Sunday working is the norm in production weeks and for one-off events.

Holidays:Your holiday entitlement is 28 days per annum (inclusive of Public Holidays), increasing by 1 day per annum to a maximum of 33 after 12 months service on 1 September.The Company’s holiday year runs between 1 September and 31 August.It is often necessary for staff to take their holiday during periods on which the building is shut to the public.

Probation:There will be a three month probationary period. Any offer of employment will be subject to the receipt of:

  • References are that satisfactory to the Octagon
  • Evidence of the right to work in the UK as defined by the Home Office
  • A valid DBS check when working with young people

Notice Period: During probation one week notice on either side.

Thereafter two months’ notice on either side.

Normal

Place of Work: Octagon Theatre Bolton. However work away from the Octagon will be required from time to time. Especially during co-productions, and during our upcoming off site season.

Expenses: All reasonable expenses incurred on company business will be paid, provided these are agreed in advance with the Head of Production.
