KS2 German - Listening

Pupils should be taught to:

Listening
  • listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding

A set of words with pictures that represent the key letter-sound patterns that differ in German, when compared to English. This is an essential resource for helping students to link the spelling, sound and meaning of new words.
Days of the week song
This song can be used in various ways, but in particular to explore sound-writing links, such as “au”.

Words to put into practice the sound-writing patterns learnt through the above Jolly Phonics resource.
A rhyming poem to practise pronunciation
This poem encourages students to practise the correct phonic pronunciation.

KS2 German - Speaking

Speaking

A rhyming song that can be used, amongst other things, for read-aloud practice.

A set of excellent worksheet to accompany this video clip, including a song at the end that provides a really good opportunity for a read-aloudactivity.

A Christmas rhyming poem that would make an excellent presentation piece for pupils to learn by heart and perform.

These can be used either as Q&A cards or for pupils to present themselves to others. The information can be adapted to include more details, depending on the ability and knowledge of the pupils.

Pupils ask and answer questions to identify the pupil with whom they have the most in common.

KS2 German - Reading

Reading

Basic personal information in German

A short rhyming poem about the Easter Bunny with some familiar vocabulary. This poem would make a very good read-aloud activity.

A series of songs for younger German learners to help them learn vocabulary.

A worksheet with very well-structured activities to help learners access the text, which includes some unfamiliar language.

KS2 German - Writing

Writing
  • write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to expressideas clearly

Pupils turn under the words at the bottom and try to complete the weather phrases from memory. Then they can check their work using the words.

Personal information
A reading comprehension task that serves as an excellent preparation task for students’ own written work.

A lesson that includes the opportunity to write both individual Christmas words and a Christmas card in German.
