Differentiated Genetics Unit
Directions: In this unit of biology, you will be directing your own learning. You will be given a series topic to learn using various activities. Some activities will be required, while other activities will be optional. This will be a self-paced unit. That means that you are in control of what you complete when and how much time you spend on each topic. All required work for this unit is due by June 6, 2014.No work for this unit will be accepted after the final due date, but you may turn in work as you complete it over the course of the unit. You are all completing and handing in your own work. THIS IS INDIVIDUAL WORK, NOT GROUP WORK unless stated otherwise.
Section 1: Understanding Traits and Vocabulary
- Select AT LEAST ONE of the following activities to help you learn the vocabulary found in the genetics unit:
-Listen and take notes on the vocabulary through a lecture given by Ms. Forget
-Read pages 272 to 275 in your textbook and explain the differences between the following terms:
- Allele vs. Gene vs. Trait
- Dominant vs. Recessive
- Homozygous vs. Heterozygous
- Genotype vs. Phenotype
- Parental Generation vs. F1 Generation
-Make flashcards for the following vocabulary words using your textbook:

-Watch the YouTube video entitled “Heredity: Crash Course Biology #9” to gain a better understanding of how the genetic vocabulary actually functions to make up your traits. This video can be found at
-Complete the worksheet entitled “Introduction to Genetics: Understanding Terms”
- Complete BOTH of the following activities in order to determine how variations in genotype can lead to varying phenotypes.
-Complete the lab activity entitled “Pipe Cleaner Babies” with a partner. Each person must hand in their own lab including analysis questions and data table. **
-On your own complete the lab entitled “Human Single Gene Traits Lab.” This lab is to be completed individually and you are to observe your own traits, not the traits of someone else in the class. **
Section 2: Punnett Squares - Monohybrid Crosses
- In order to learn how to complete monohybrid crosses complete ONE of the following:
-Read textbook pages 276 to 279
-Watch the following video on how to complete problems using monohybrid crosses:
-Use the direction sheet entitled “How to Solve Monohybrid Crosses” to complete the worksheet entitled, “Punnett Squares – Crosses Involving One Trait”
*If you have completedall of the above tasks on your own and do not know how to successfully do punnett square problems on your own then ask Ms. Forget for help.
- Complete at least ONE of the following worksheets to show your mastery of monohybrid crosses:
-Bikini Bottom Genetics
-Bikini Bottom Genetics 2
-OompahLoompah Genetics
* If you are struggling with the worksheet you selected, complete the either the worksheet entitled "Punnet Square Sheet" or the worksheet entitled "Punnett Square Worksheet" first. They are easier problems they will help you understand punnett squares before you complete one of the harder worksheets.
Section 3: Punnett Squares - Dihybrid Crosses(Academic and Advanced Applied Students)
- In order to learn how to complete dihybrid crosses complete ONE of the following:
-Watch the following video on how to complete dihybrid cross problems:
-Use the direction sheet entitled “Dihybrid Crosses: Crosses that Involve Two Traits” to complete the worksheet entitled, “Punnett Squares – Crosses Involving Two Traits”
- Complete the worksheet entitled, "Dihybrid Crosses" **
Section 4: Punnett Squares - Incomplete Dominance, Codominance, and Multiple Alleles
- In order to learn how to complete punnett squares involving incomplete dominance, codominance, and multiple alleles:
-Use textbook pages 282 - 283 to define incomplete dominance, codominance, and multiple alleles and learn how to complete punnett squares using them.
-Watch the following video on how to complete codominance punnett square problems:

-Complete the worksheet entitled "Blood Type and Inheritance" to learn how to predict offspring blood types using punnett squares

- Complete the worksheet entitled "Using Blood Tests to Identify Babies and Criminals" to show your mastery of blood types and codominance. **
Section 5: Punnett Squares - Sex-Linked Traits
- In order to learn how to complete crosses involving sex-linked traits complete ONE of the following:
-Read over the direction sheet entitled “How to Sex-Linked Cross Problems”
-Watch the following video on how to complete sex-linked punnett square problems:
- Complete at least ONE of the following worksheets to show you can master crosses involving sex-linked traits:
-Sex-Linked Punnett Square Practice Problems
-Sex-Linked Inheritance
Section 6: Punnett Squares Mastery Problem Set
In order to show your mastery of all types of punnett square problems, you must complete two levels of the worksheets entitled "Genetic Crosses." These problems will be counted as a test grade and are therefore to be completed on your own without the use of a textbook. You may either complete levels I and II or levels II and III. **
Section 7: Karyotypes
- In order to learn about karyotypes please complete the following:
-Watch the following video:
-Complete the worksheet entitled "Karyotyping and Mutations Worksheet." **
-Complete the "Karyotype Lab." **
Section 8: Pedigrees
- In order to learn how to read a pedigree complete one of the following:
-Read textbook pages 280 to 281
-Use the direction sheet entitled “How to Read Pedigrees” to complete the worksheet entitled, “Genetics Pedigree Worksheet”
- In order to practice reading pedigrees complete ONE of the following:
-Complete two levels of the Pedigree Leveled Worksheets
-Complete the packet entitled “Pedigree Worksheet: Interpreting a Human Pedigree”
- In order to show your mastery of making and interpreting pedigrees, complete lab activity entitled “Creating a Pedigree” **
Genetics Final Project: Creating a Species
****For your final project for the genetics unit complete the project entitled, “Genetics Project: Design a Species” ****
** Denotes an assignment that is mandatory!
All mandatory assignments are due no later than June 6th. If you do not use your class time wisely, you will have to finish all of the required assignments on your own time.
