SCOTUSblog Receives American Gavel Award
From American Judges Association

New Orleans -- October 10, 2012 -- The American Judges Association (AJA) presented its third American Gavel Award for National Distinguished Reporting about the Judiciary to SCOTUSblog last week during AJA’s annual conference in New Orleans.

AJA created the award in 2009 to recognize the highest standards of reporting about courts and the justice system. “This award recognizes legal journalism at its best, and highlights the importance of journalism in educating the public about the legal system and the fundamental principles and values upon which that system is based,” said AJA President Judge Kevin Burke.

SCOTUSblog is devoted to comprehensively covering the United States Supreme Court without bias and according to the highest journalistic and legal ethicalstandards.Tom Goldstein and Amy Howe, husband and wife are attorneys who practice before the Supreme Court and are intimately familiar with its operation. They founded the blog in 2002. Noted Supreme CourtReporter Lyle Denniston joined a few years later.

SCOTUSblog in the first decade of its existence has become the best continuing source of information about the decisions and operation of the Supreme Court.

AJA is the “Voice of the Judiciary” and works to improve the effective and impartial administration of justice, to enhance the independence and status of the judiciary, to provide for continuing education of its members, and to promote the interchange of ideas of a judicial nature among judges, court organizations, and the public.

The National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., provides executive secretariat services to AJA. Founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, NCSC also provides education, training, technology, management, and research services to the nation’s state courts.
