Chair’s report by Will Belfield

It's been a testing season, full of rewards and goodbyes. Goodbye to John's firm hand at the tiller and, for the first time, goodbye to a full crop of our older u16 players. But we have also said hello to a new group of eager youngsters and the coaching talent of Molly Tavolieri and Dom Evans, each having attained their level two EB coaching qualification.

We have succeeded on and off court as a club, with players representing Sussex, the South East and England Basketball. Numerous players have also made the transition to NL teams. Our U11s winning the league at a canter being a particular highlight of our season, but I will let our coaches sum up their year shortly. We were also rewarded at the first West Sussex County Times Youth Awards.

We would like to thank all the parent helpers who have made this season possible, Sarah Maclean for her excellent organisational skills, Kerry Winton and friends selling cakes on Forest home match days, kit washers galore, team managers (thank you Sharon Hutchinson) are just examples. Thank Nicky Shaw for her continued support of our club and all the volunteers who make the running of the club possible. We would be lost without them.

I'd also like to thank Graham O'Dell for the hard work he put into the arranging and running of this years superb end of season bash. It was great to get together so many of our players and the parents who have traipsed across the region, cheering on the club and making our season special.

And to all the coaches, without whom the club would be just a bunch of kids running wild and winning half as many games (or is that twice as many?), I wish to extend my particular thanks (fake a tear) to them. Before I 'thank out' completely I'd like to mention the young Hawks who help out with additional coaching duties and Gianni, who makes so much of this possible.

All these things continue to make the Hawks one of the friendliest and best supported clubs in Sussex and long may this continue.

Thank you all

Will

Treasurer’s report by Gianni Lozzi

Horsham Hawks Basketball Club - AGM 2014

Treasurer Report

Annual Accounts

The annual accounts are as detailed on the attached documents.
The accounts represent the situation as at 31stMay 2014 .
This Financial year goes from 1stAugust 2013 to 31stMay 2014 as decided at last year AGM .

Main Expenditures

The clubs court hire costs increased this season due to the use of a new venue (Christ Hospital) for the U14, that was also the most expensive of the courts we used for weekly trainings.

The use of cheaper St Wilfrids court for U14/U16 home matches on Fridays instead than Tanbridge School court helped to take down home matches costs .

Referees costs includes also cost of CVL games for U11 and U12.
Table official cost grown up due number of games and paid trip expenses for T.O at CVL matches .

Income

The sales of hoodies generated a little profit that covered part of the cost of membership t-shirts .A new provider was found by our Chairman.
Sponsorships
No sponsorships or donations this season .

Next Season

Next season we have to look for cheaper courts in order to not increase membership fees for the future. Use of cheaper courts it helps also to keep low the cost of home matches .
Alternatives could be to find a sponsor or to organize fundraising events .

Audit of Accounts

On request of Club Chairman the Accounts have been audited and a report has been generated .

The main concern of the auditor is about the lack of documentation available about cash management related to Saturdays pay and play money collection and referees and table officials cash payments.

The Auditor's suggestion is to adopt receipts for any cash paid to officials and keep registers for Saturdays sessions .

Treasurer is testing an Accounting Software in order to use it for Club Accounts management .

U16’s report by Graham O’Dell

  • Good year for the team
  • Finished 4th in the league, despite a number of injuries throughout the season
  • Several players playing at higher level elsewhere
  • Sad that a number have come to the end of their Hawks experience
  • First year of playing read and react – looking to build on that next season
  • Looking forward to reuniting a number of the cup winning team from 2 years ago
  • Home games at Crawley – personally I feel they have adversely impacted the club and am keen to play in Horsham, even if it costs a bit more
  • Thanks to Nick and Sarah for all their support

U14’s report by Will Belfield

U14s report

Our u14 did remarkably well this year, finishing just outside the playoff places, despite it being my first season as a head coach. We started with a win. We ended with a win, what came between is consigned to the history books.

I took great pleasure in watching the team develop and, with Dom and John assisting, probably learnt as much as the squad. It's true, as a coach you really do go up for every rebound, take every shot. Perhaps if I got out of the way we'd have sunk a few more baskets.

I'd like to thank my assistant coaches, my team manager Sharon Hutchinson and Sarah Maclean for all of their help in keeping me at least partially sane. But most of all I'd like to thank my squad.

U12’s report by Nick Probin

Not quite as successful as last year for the U12’s and it would be fair to say that 2013/14 was a challenging year with a new coach getting to know his new charges and his new charges getting to know the coach.

I can’t help but briefly mention there were some discipline issues early on which didn’t help (now I know how teachers feel) but leaving those aside the main problem at the beginning of the season was a shortage of numbers both at training and matches and we were indebted to the U11’s for helping swell our ranks in a number of games.

Long term injuries and absences meant we were rarely able to get full squads and we were not helped by BBSX refusing our request for a couple of girls from the U14 squad to bolster the team which we felt would have helped the overall development of the squad.

The introduction of the CVL was another minus with players and parents having to trek to Brighton for home games further exacerbated by BBSX deciding to use our games as practice matches for new referees and for those of you present at the first D&D game you will know how frustrating it got with EVERYTHING conspiring against us.

Undaunted by all these things, the team stuck together and the quality of basketball saw a distinct improvement over the season. Positive contributions from all the players saw a high level of team moral at matches and whilst only winning 1 game during the season, there were a number of close encounters that could have gone either way.

Looking ahead to next season with the players graduating to the U14’s, we are looking at additional training sessions through the Summer and have already contacted all parents to gauge the level of interest which seems to be high.

Hopefully, these extra sessions will help the players be even better prepared for what will be another tough year but one in which, if they apply themselves in a positive, disciplined and constructive way, they should do well.

Finally, a big thank you to Molly, in particular, for her terrific support as Team Manager, whose help was invaluable throughout the season and to the kit washers and supporters for sticking with us through thick and thin.

U11s report by Molly Tavolieri

The team has grown and developed so much in the last 2 years. It is lovely to see all the hard work everyone puts in pays off.

15 straight wins, league champions, several players representing Sussex and SE and youth sport team award ... Wow! That is pretty amazing for such young kids. All that is thanks to all the support we get from everyone around us.

Dave, Dom and I could not be more proud. We thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone this season and cannot wait for the next one.

2013 – 2014 Season Budgets

Training Session Costs

The costs vary considerably according to the location. This season the costs were as follow …

Millais£48.60 for 1.5 hours (£32.40 per hour)

Tanbridge£66.50 for 1 hour and 45 minutes (£38 per hour)

Christ’s Hospital£66.42 for 1.5 hours(£44.28 per hour)

St. Wilfrid’s, Crawley£20 per hour

Holbrook Club£24 per hour

Forest£17.98 per hour

The costs for the coming season are not yet available. There is a possibility of using the court at Collyer’s as they are interested in working with the Hawks to establish an U18 team. In return we may be able to negotiate on the hourly court rate.

The use of St. Wilfrid’s as the location of our Friday night games was not popular with some people - they would much prefer to play back in Horsham if at all possible.

The days for training to take place haven’t been established yet. A suggestion was made that matches could be played on training nights as this would reduce the costs, however we need to allow two hours for each training session.

The pay and play sessions are proving to be very popular – it is planned to keep the cost per player at £4 per session unless the cost of the court hire goes up considerably, necessitating a rise in the charge.

Membership Fees

It is thought that the teams will all be full. It is planned to keep the membership fees at the same level as last year, unless the court fees increase significantly.

Volunteer & player training

There is a need for more table officials and we have young players keen to do the training. A list of players interested in doing the training needs to be put together and training needs to be scheduled. Sarah Maclean to follow this up.

Equipment

New size 5 balls are needed – coaches to check how many new balls we need and get back to Gianni Lozzi with their requirements.

Web-site

It is felt that the web-site is more user-friendly now.

2014-15 Teams
