Dummer Parent Group

Minutes for August 24, 2009

A meeting was called to order by Lisa Saitta, retired President at Dummer Elementary School, Sandwich, Illinois on August 24, 2009.

In attendance were: Lisa Saitta, retired President, Carol Laube, New President, Principal Tom Sodaro, Bonnie Talty, Andrea Barker, Heather Eberly and Ronda Scherer.

Principal’s Report

Ø  Mr. Z’s Fundraiser: Mr. Sodaro reported that August 28, 2009 was to be the kickoff to start the fundraiser with an end date of September 14, 2009. Mr. Z’s donated 2 scooters for the fair stand. The stand will also be raffling off a 50” plasma TV on the last day of the fair. Pick-up for Mr. Z’s will be October 15, 2009 in the gym at 5 p.m. There will not be a classroom contest this year for Mr. Z’s.

Ø  Subway: Mr. Sodaro asked if Dummer wanted to enroll the school in the School Reward program. Scherer asked how the program works. Mr. Sodaro explained that a gift card would need to be purchased, linked to Dummer School, and when that gift card was used at Subway, a portion of the purchase would be given to Dummer. It was decided not to enroll Dummer in the program.

Ø  Laptops: Mr. Sodaro explained that Dummer has donated laptops that need to have the speed increased at a cost of $80/laptop. The Library has 30 computers and 22 of them are connected to the lab. The laptops will add 5 more.

Ø  Reading: There is now a Lexia program for reading intervention. Reading plus is shared with the Middle School. It is used for reading and comprehension. Students who need RTI will use these programs and those students who do not need intervention will have D.E.A.R time in a separate classroom.

Ø  Fear Factor Night: It was decided that October 23, 2009 would be Fear Factor Night from the hours of 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Teacher’s Report

Ø  Teacher representative: Mrs. McGregory said volunteered.

Ø  Tie-Dye: Mrs. McGregory suggested doing Tie-Dye t-shirts for the students. A discussion followed regarding the cost of the activity. Mrs. Barker suggested buying do-rags instead of shirts to save money and asked if they could be worn on a special day. Mr. Sodaro Ok’d the wearing of the do-rags for a special occasion. The discussion was tabled until the next meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Ø  Lisa Saitta presented the report as printed.

Ø  Jenny Donahue is no longer going to be the treasurer and Carol Laube will contact her to get the treasurer information.

Ø  There was discussion about the activities/expenses to help the new parents understand what the fundraising money was to be used for.

New Business

Ø  Parent Group: Meetings will be held the last Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The next meeting will be September 28, 2009.

Ø  Election of Officers: Carol Laube advised those attending there was no election of officers at the last meeting because she was the only 4th grade parent. She is now the current President. Ronda Scherer advised she will be the Secretary and Bonnie Talty may be the Treasurer.

Ø  Volunteer List: Carol Laube explained the volunteer list and asked for Chairs and Helpers. Those attending advised they are still involved in Elementary parent groups and will need to get back to her on the scheduling.

Ø  Spirit Wear: We will shop around for Spirit Wear to try to get a better price.

Ø  Mystery Workshop: It was agreed to pay the $194 down payment for the 5th grade murder mystery play. The front office will let us know of the balance due for the play in February 2010.
