3. Reports

  • TLA Executive Board – Daniel Burgard. Key points shared with group -
  • Invitation to share any concerns, comments to take back to the Executive Board.
  • Annual Conference in Dallas scheduled for April 10th – 13th
  • Theme of Annual Conference: Perfecting your game.
  • Push on recruitment and retention especially among academic librarians.
  • Creation of a new TLA entity called ‘Discussion Group’.
  • Work being done to standardize the look and feel of all TLA logos including the book award logos.
  • Shared hiring timeline for TLA Executive Director, Pat Smith who is retiring after 30 years of service.
  • Councilor – Donita Ward (Alt. Council)
  • Passed out report from Morgan McMillian.
  • Secretary – Geeta Halley
  • Minutes of April 20th, 2017 were passed out and approved.
  • Treasurer – Tine Walczyk
  • Copy of the Finance Report was passed out.
  • Ending fund balance $2,203.08.
  • No Tall Texan Stipend awarded.
  • Positive income because our venue for District 3 conference has been donated.
  • District 3 Facebook Group – Liz Hibbs
  • Facebook page created for District 3.
  • Invited members to post news about their libraries.
  • Webmaster – Megan Ballengee
  • Added volunteer form to webpage.

4. Fall Meeting

Our Texas Library Association District 3 Fall Meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 6, 2017. Our theme for this meeting is "Libraries Respond to Changing Communities"

Keynote Speakers:

Dr. Julie Todaro, 2016-2017 President of the American Library Association

Miguel Figueroa, director of the American Library Association Center for the Future of Libraries

Breakout Session Presenters:

●“Social Workers in Libraries” Eric P. Lashley, Library Director, Georgetown Public Library

●“ESL classes in the library” Elizabeth Evans, Cataloging and Technical Services Librarian

●“Introducing Climate Change with STEM Programming for Adults and Children” Maggie Goodman Library Director, Johnson City Library

●“Fighting Fake News with Information Literacy” Sarah Morris, Co-Director- Nucleus Learning Network

5. Nominating Committee Report-Cristine Ragland

  • Member introduction
  • Setting committee numbers/positions/terms : Chair, Vice-Chair, 3 members
  • Cheryl Michulka proposed a motion to establish parameters for the positions of Chair and Vice Chair for the Nominating Commitee and the Stipend Committee. The parameters proposed were (1) 2 year terms for the Chair and Vice Chair (2) Along with the Chair and Vice Chair, the Nominating and Stipend Commitees would also have three committee members with 3 year terms. (3) The three committee members could extend their 3 year terms if they so desired. (4) The Vice Chair of each committee would take on the responsibility of the Chair.
  • This motion was approved and passed unanimously.

7. New business/Announcements

  • TLA Continuing Education update – Ted Wanner
  • Leadership Launchpad - Upcoming continuing education opportunity for those in the library field less than 5 years
  • Leadership Launchpad will be taught by Tall Texan alumni.
  • Leadership Launchpad will be a 6 hour long workshop scheduled the day before or the day after each District’s conference. Costs will be kept low.
  • District Planning Committee – Elizabeth Howard
  • Meeting at 2:30 p.m. on July 8th, 2017
