RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

University of Virginia 2015 – Current

Assistant Professor

Director of the NeuroVoice Lab

The NeuroVoice lab at the University of Virginia conducts research examining the neurophysiology and neural bases involved in voice, communication, swallowing and cognition. Our aim is to improve the understanding of the neurophysiology of learning to determine the effects treatment methods and dosages in clinical populations. Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), the NeuroVoice Lab has the capability to examine cortical activation patterns to determine neuroplasticity associated with rehabilitative techniques. We also have a full suite of stroboscopy, aerodynamic, acoustic, and respiratory evaluation and research equipment.

Current studies:

Examination of motor mirror neuron activation during categorical perception

Learning effects of voice therapy training on voice quality and cortical activation patterns using fNIRS

James Madison University, 2012 – 2015
