Materials: Dr. Cupp Readers & Journal Writers Part 2 p. 209-210, Reader#53 p. 1, and ThinkerBox Book Chapter 10 pages 28-36.

Objectives: TLW read the sight words how, brown, grow, own, show, black, and eight.
TLW read with fluency.
TLW answer comprehension questions.
Before Students begin reading pages 1-3: This Reader provides many opportunities for students to discuss what it takes to be a friend. The teacher should continue to allow students to read orally from other books. The transition out of Dr. Cupp Readers should start at this time. Students will know 238 sight words and how to sound out many words when they complete this Reader. Students will be able to read stories written by other authors.
Procedure: Introduction of new sight words how, brown, grow, own, show, black, and eight. The new sight word eight will be difficult for students to sound out on their own. The teacher will need to provide assistance.
Students will read page 1.

Section C-Ten Minute Phonics
1/3 of the group time
Materials: Reader #53 p. 6-7, Manual p.203, Toolbox Decks 33,34, 35, and 36.
Objective: TLW sound out Diphthong-ou-house..
Teacher’s Note: In Lessons 52-55, diphthongs are introduced. If students have trouble sounding out words when they need diphthongs in text, then make a Card Deck for diphthongs.
Procedure: The teacher either writes ou on the board or on an index card. “When you see the letters ou in a word, the ou will make the /ou/ as in house.”Students will then practice sounding out the words with ou in the Reader. If necessary, the teacher will write these words on index cards and students will practice sounding out the words on the cards.
p. 7- Review and practice- Students should practice sounding out words with either Toolbox Card Decks or pages 6 and 7 in the reader.
Assessment- Page 6
The teacher will select four words from column one or two. Students will take turns sounding out words.

Independent Time for Reader #53
The teacher may select pages 8 and 9 of Reader 53. Suggested Writing Activity- Draw a picture showing something that you were determined to do. Write a story telling how you solved your problem.
