RESEARCH UNIT: LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEXT

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR M AND PhDSTUDY

This document relates to the procedure to be followed by prospective MA and PhD students, as well as their supervisors/promoters in the process of application for M and PhD study.

Step 1:Notice of intended study.

The prospective studentcompletes formAF-1and reports to the Director: RU in the year preceding the intended year of study (i.e. before 30 October). The candidate must preferably report in person, but in exceptional cases, the interview may be conducted via an electronic medium.

(Remark: The Director: RU, the Director: School of Languagesand the chairperson of the sub-program in question check the qualifications/study record/result of the TALPS test[1]and the motivation offered by the candidate. A decision is then made about conditional admission[2]in consultation with a suitable (available) supervisor/promoter. The Office of the Research Unit informs the student about the decision. If the decision is positive, the student is requested to make contact with the supervisor/promoter and also to complete the formal application form for admission to the NWU before the due date.)

Step 2:Complete the formal NWU application form.

The student completes the appropriate NWU application form, and if applicable, also a bursary application form.

It is compulsory for all successful candidates to attend the Introductory Postgraduate Workshop in February. (Depending on the needs, more than one postgraduate workshop per year will be held. Particulars about the workshops will be provided by the Office of the Research Unit.)

Step 3:Agreement of cooperation.

The student and the proposed supervisor/promoter both sign an agreement (AF-2) which describes the responsibilities of both parties.

(Remark: Supervisor/promotertakes initiative, gets the document, and arranges for it to be signed, and submits it to the Office of the RU before or on the last day of registration (31 March).)

Step 4:Student registers formally for course.

Registration takes place before or on 31 Marchof the year of enrolment.
