Psalm 8Lord, our Lord,how majestic is your namein all the earth! You have set your gloryin the heavens. Through the praise of children and infantsyou have established a strongholdagainst your enemies,to silence the foeand the avenger.

OT look at crowns

  • Psalms = Love and compassion, glory and honor, victory,(proverbs) blessings and knowledge, (Isaiah) Beauty and joy
  • Always physical crowns represent rulers

NT crowns - Jesus

  • Matthew 27:29 and then twisted together acrownof thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.
  • Revelation 19:12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are manycrowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.

NT crowns can represent spiritual realities

  • 1 Corinthians 9:25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get acrownthat will not last, but we do it to get acrownthat will last forever
  • All things on this earth are subject to decay and will perish. Jesus urges us to not store our treasures on earth “where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19)

NT crowns that believers can get

2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight,I have finished the race,I have kept the faith.8Now there is in store for methe crown of righteousness,which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Romans 3:22 Thisrighteousnessis given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,

  • James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive thecrownof life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,and have it to the full.

1 John 2:25 And this is what he promised us—eternal life.

1 Peter 5:2-4 Be shepherds of God’s flockthat is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be;not pursuing dishonest gain,but eager to serve;3not lording it overthose entrusted to you, but being examplesto the flock.4Andwhen the Chief Shepherdappears, you will receive the crown of glorythat will never fade away.

2 Corinthians 4:4-6 The godof this agehas blindedthe minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ,who is the image of God.5For what we preach is not ourselves,but Jesus Christ as Lord,and ourselves as your servantsfor Jesus’ sake.6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”made his light shine in our heartsto give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 (KJV)For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For thejoysetbefore him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Luke 15:7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

A Crown for a church

  • Revelation 2:10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give youlife as your victor’scrown.
  • Revelation 3:11 I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take yourcrown.

Casting crowns

Revelation 4:10(KJV) The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne,
