Course Description/Overview

Prerequisite Guidelines: completion of Foundations in Art 1 with a grade B or better, completion of Foundations of Art 2 with a grade B or better and a semester of Drawing and Paintingwith a grade B or better. Junior or Senior class status.

Course Description: AP Studio Art is for the student interested in further exploration of 2 Dimensional, 3 Dimensional or Drawing forms. Students will use a variety of materials to create and understand the principles of design.

Pink jewel eraser

*Students are encouraged at advanced levels to acquire their own tools and materials applicable to their medium of choice

Grading Policy

Grades will be based on the following:

Sketchbook (weekly) / 500
Projects (approximately 20 per semester) / 500
Class attendance/participation / 500
Total Points / 1500

Each semester, students will exhibit an understanding of the Principles of Design. The required guidelines form an AP Studio portfolio can be found of the College Board website

Weekly Sketchbook

Sketchbooks are due on the last day of the week. This is an out of class assignment to be completed on the students own time. Students are to choose the subject of their drawing and write a critical reflection about the drawing. Each Sketchbook is worth 25 points. For every day a sketchbook assignment is late a 5 point deduction occurs, after 5 days score is a zero.

Students will complete several “try it” techniques found in the textbook to familiarize themselves by example in class.

“Write About It”

Students will use the ‘critical method”, an art criticism through describing, analysis, interpretation and evaluation to complete a writing assignment about artwork they have chosen from the text, internet and or any publication with images of art.

I / Incomplete; given only when a student is unable to complete a segment of the course because of circumstances beyond the student’s control. A grade of incomplete may be given only when approved in writing by the department chair or school dean.
X / Conditional, with no grade points per credit; given only when the student is at fault in failing to complete a minor segment of a course, but in the judgment of the instructor does not need to repeat the course. It must be made up within the next semester in residence or the grade becomes a failure (F). A (X) grade is computed into the grade point average as a (F) grade.
