A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE GREENVILLE HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY/COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING SQUAD OF GREENVILLE COUNTY ON ITS VICTORY IN THE 2003 CLASS AAA STATE CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION.

Whereas, the 2003 Greenville High School Varsity/Competitive Cheerleading Squad of Greenville County won the Class AAA State Championship in a spirited performance for the second time in three years; and

Whereas, the squad performed to, and was inspired by, music proclaiming their victory as “History in the Making, Part II”; and

Whereas, these historymaking young women included only six of the 2002 state championship runnerup squad members and no seniors; and

Whereas, the cheerleaders’ motto spurred them on to victory: “History has demonstrated that the most notable winners encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed. They eventually won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeat.”; and

Whereas, the squad practiced during the summer and school year, cheered for the Greenville High School Football Team every Friday night, performed at pep rallies, visited local elementary schools in support of Red Ribbon Week, and competed on weekends; and

Whereas, these dedicated members of the Greenville High School Cheerleading Squad sacrificed many hours during lunch periods, after school, and on weekends towards achieving their goal of securing the state cheerleading championship title; and

Whereas, approximately one hundred fifty hours of practice on the 2003 competition routine culminated in one hundred fifty seconds of performance at the state finals competition on Saturday, November 15, 2003; and

Whereas, the championship win required the hard work and special talent of every member of the squad and the coach; and

Whereas, using those talents, Coach Cindy Willett and the members of the cheerleading squad performed with determination and precision to earn the title of the best cheerleading team in their division; and

Whereas, the members of this exceptional squad are: Allison Ball, Katie Carnes, Bonnie Chasteen, Holly DeJong, Carlea Dunn, Courtney Elrod, Lauren Elrod, Mary Dallas Erwin, Carmen Houston, Britton Hunter, Helen Oxner, Alicia Pepper, Rachel Reid, Hayden Riley, Madeleine Ruff, Stephanie Ruff, Callie Sherard, Jessica Stone, Melissa Stuart, Kendal Toohey, and Suzanne Wilson; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize the skill and determination of these young South Carolinians and encourage them to use those skills in their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the South Carolina House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the Greenville High School Varsity/Competitive Cheerleading Squad of Greenville County on its victory in the 2003 Class AAA State Cheerleading Championship Competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Greenville High School Varsity/Competitive Cheerleading Squad and Coach Cindy Willett.
