Topic 8: Applications of FunctionsLesson

Lesson Synopsis

Participants will engage in multiple learning activities, as an individual, in pairs, and in small groups with the Algebraic Problem Solving Assessment Targets listed below in the Lesson Goals taken from the GED Assessment Guide for Educators, Chapter 2, pp. 2.25 & 2.26.

Lesson Goals

Participants will:

A.5.e – For a function that models a linear or nonlinear relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features of graphs and tables in terms of quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship.

A.7.d – Compare properties of two linear or quadratic functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, numerically in tables, graphically or by verbal descriptions).

Materials Utilized

PPT presentation from the Facilitator Guide

Participant Version of the PPT

Chart paper for each group

Common Core Achieve Exercise Book by McGraw Hill

Lesson Content

Part A: Introduction/Lesson Overview (2 minutes)

Introduce the Lesson Goals using Slide 3.

Slide 3: Lesson Goals

Recall that in two earlier lessons today, you completed two assignments in small groups that assessed your understanding of these two GED Assessment Targets. We will spend the first 15 to 20 minutes of this lesson going over those assignments.

Part B: Group Work Review and Discussion(15-20minutes)

Slide 4: Group Work Review and Discussion

Use this slide to set up the process for this part of the lesson. Circulate among the groups to provide support and answer any questions the group cannot resolve themselves.

Slides 5 & 6:Small Group Exercise!

Show these two slides to remind the groups of six of the assignments that they are reviewing and discussing at this time.

Part C: Compare Quadratic Functions Skill Builder Activity(55minutes)

Distribute the Compare Quadratic Functions student handout to participants. Ask them why companies would want to maximize or minimize certain quantities and what those quantities might be.

Possible answers: minimize costs, maximize profit

Ask one of the participants to read aloud the “Why the Skill Matters” on the student handout. When comparing similar types of information from different sources, point out that the data may be in different forms.

Ask another participant to read aloud the Activity Directions. Have the participants look at the data from each of the three plants and how it is in different forms.

Slide 7:Compare Quadratic Functions Skill Builder Activity

Once you have done the above, then make the first part of the activity assignment using the steps on this slide.

Slide 8:Quadratic Functions Skill Builder Activity

Allow the plant groups to have 30 minutes to complete the process and then share out their work. Allow each group 5 minutes to share their equations, charts, and graphs.

Slide 9:Compare Quadratic Functions Skill Builder Activity

Spend the last 15 minutes having the groups answer the two questions on this slide and in the activity handout. Give them 10 minutes to come up with their answers and then call all back together to discuss the answers.
