GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING RECOGNITION AWARD NOMINEES

Nominations may be made by any staff and volunteers, as long as the guidelines are met.

One guideline which is an absolute is that the award recipient must be able to attend the ceremony and give an acceptance speech, even if it is brief.

Nominations must be typewritten. Nominations are distributed to administrative staff in the Bellport office for review and collaborative determination of honorees.

Reminder: After the award recipients are chosen, please inform the recipients’ home library directors for the purposes of acknowledgement and publicity. Be sure the directors’ names are place on the invitation list.

Student of the Year (ESOL BL)

  1. Longevity: Student must have been in the program for at least one year.
  2. Commitment: Student must be reliable and enthusiastic about being tutored, (i.e. Faithful attendance at sessions and completed homework assignments.)
  3. Accomplishments: New or better job, reading more, additional schooling, etc.
  4. Advancement: Has student made strides in reading, writing, speaking ability?
  5. Involvement: Has student written for Reading for Life, volunteered his/her time, or been a spokesperson for the organization?

Tutor of the Year (ESOL BL)

  1. Longevity: Tutor must have been in the program at least one year.
  2. Commitment: Tutor must be reliable about meeting with student(s), and display qualities such as patience and perseverence.
  3. Accomplishments: Has the tutor formed a good relationship with his/her student(s)? How has their tutoring positively influenced or changed the student's and their family's lives (improved self-esteem, confidence, relationships, job prospects/advancement, etc)?
  4. Involvement: Does the tutor work with several students? Does the tutor support the organization in ways other than tutoring, such as being a spokesperson or assisting with workshop training?

Volunteer of the Year

1.The candidate must have been with the program for a minimum of one year.

2.Involvement with the organization in ways other than, but may include, tutoring, (i.e. testing, office volunteer, workshop assistant, donations, public spokesperson, outreach efforts, etc.)

3.Emphasis will be placed on selecting someone who embodies a supportive nature, for the benefit of the mission of the organization as a whole.

Tester of the Year (ESOL & BL)

In terms of evaluations/testing performed, consider:

  • Quantity
  • Quality, thoroughness
  • Enthusiasm
  • Sensitivity
  • Reliability

It is not expected that any individual candidate will qualify in all areas outlined in any particular category. These are guidelines to assist in submission of appropriate nominations.

Nominations should be comprehensive yet need not be elaborate. Include your name and region, the candidate's name and the award for which you are nominating them, and the reasons the candidate qualifies.
