Role Description

The Role:
  • Undertake a literature review of emotional intelligence (EI), with specific emphasis on the impact of EI coaching on occupational stress and work efficacy.
  • Design and deliver an EI coaching programme to Irish third level lecturers to enable them to develop key emotional competencies (e.g. empathy, self-regard, social responsibility).
  • Design and conduct a quantitative analysis of the impact of the provision of EI coaching on lecturers’ perceived levels of occupational stress and work efficacy.
  • Design and conduct a qualitative analysis to capture lecturers’ attitudes and opinions as to the efficacy of emotional intelligence coaching as a means of combatting work related stress.
  • Analyse current theory and practice related to emotional intelligence and education and suggest changes, where necessary, based on the results of this study.
  • Act in accordance with the objectives of the research project and conform to highest standards of ethics possible.
  • Undertake other duties as may be reasonably required from time-to-time.
  • The research student will be required to be present at the Postgraduate Research Centre in the LINC at ITB full-time Monday to Friday.

Research experience required:

Desirable Experience:
  • BA/BSc with 1st class honours or ideally, MA/MSc in psychology, social science, education or a commensurate discipline.
  • Strong research skills both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Ability to work both independently and with others.
  • Ability to demonstrate project development skills and a track record of delivering on objectives.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills.

Additional information:

Funding:
The scholarship will be awarded for a period of 2 years to a value of €12,000 per year. There is the possibility that funding can be provided for a further 2 year period should the project be advanced from MA to PhD level.
However, this is not guaranteed.
Funding will cover the following elements:
  • A maintenance grant of €10,000 per year
  • Travel/Consumables/Materials budget of €2,000 per year
Tuition fees for all scholarship holders will be funded to a max of €4,500 per year for two years.
Any non-EU scholarship holder will be eligible for additional fees.
