An Introduction to Pathology as a Medical Specialty

This one month fellowship is intended for a rising second year medical student who is interested in the field of pathology. The purpose of the fellowship is to expose the student to the practice of pathology as a medical specialty, to introduce the general principles of disease and to provide mentorship for the student to study and explore a specific disease process.

Fellowship dates: Monday, June 27-Friday, July 22, 2015, 8AM-5PM.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITES

1.  Arrive promptly for each session.

2.  Meet weekly with Dr. Furlong regarding schedules and assignments.

3.  Meet twice a week for review/didactic sessions.

4.  Meet weekly with your resident mentor.

5.  Attend all weekly didactic sessions and resident conferences as scheduled.

6.  Attend 2 tumor boards of your choice during the 4-week fellowship.

7.  Choose an organ system of interest for special focus on the subspecialty services.

8.  Choose one disease process within the organ system of choice to further investigate for the assigned presentation and paper.

9.  Review the literature and include your review as part of the assignment.

10.  Complete the written assignment and email electronic version to Dr. Furlong.

11.  Give a brief oral presentation on your project.

12.  Complete a brief evaluation of the program.

*A complete course book will be provided at the beginning of the fellowship.

*Two students will be selected for this fellowship and each will be provided a small stipend of $1000.
