ENGLISH 10A SUMMER READING – 2013-2014

Mrs. Freeman

For your summer reading, you must read two of the following books:

the joy luck club – amy tan
of mice and men – john steinbeck
to kill a mockingbird - Harper lee
the glass menagerie (a play) – tennessee williams

We will be re-reading to kill a mockingbird during the school year when each student must supply his/her own copy.

These novels will be available to you at Barnes & Noble at Virginia Center Commons as well as at other book stores. The public libraries should have them, too.

Henrico County Public Schools strongly encourages parents/guardians to work with their children as they choose their summer reading books.

In order for you to receive the maximum experience from reading your books, you need to allow yourself time to carefully complete this assignment. Using a website as a shortcut will only defeat the purpose of your registering for an honorsenglish class.

Your writing assignment will be a dialectical journal for each book that will count as
one test grade per journal. Instructions for composing this journal are on the next page.

Creating a Dialectical Journal

The purpose of a dialectical journal is to identify significant pieces of text and explain the significance. It is another form of highlighting/annotating a text and should be used to think about, digest, summarize, question, clarify, critique, and remember what is read.

This kind of writing is done in two columns with a quotation or fact from the text (including page numbers) on the left and the reader's corresponding comment on the right. It is evaluated onthe basis of its quality as well as quantity; therefore, the reader will want to put thought into each entry. Students should respond on a frequent, consistent basis throughout the reading of each novel. Each book will have its own journal with twenty (20)comments required per book. Note that page numbers follow each quotation and that the reaction is written in COMPLETE SENTENCES. Neatness counts!

Quotation from Text / Reaction / Analysis
Sentence, line, phrase, or paraphrase that demonstrates:
•An effective use of stylistic or literary devices
•Structural shifts or turns in the plot
•Examples of patterns: recurring images, ideas, colors, symbols, or motifs
•Passages with confusing language or unfamiliar vocabulary
•Character development
•A connection to another piece of literature
•Events that you find surprising or confusing / In this column, you will analyze the quotation from the text.
