School Council Minutes 02/17/2016
Marshpoint School Council met in its regular session on Wednesday, February 17, 2016. The meeting was held at Marshpoint Elementary School, 135 Whitemarsh Island Rd., Savannah, GA 31410.
School Council members present: Holly Adams, Agie Connelly, James Devine, Melissa Olszewski, Aida Avendano, Ellen Lloyd, Carter Eubank, Lynne Phillips and Gillian Warmkessel. Guests were Dr. Hill and Ms. Devine.
1. Call to Order: James Devine called the meeting to order at 7:38am.
2. Roll Call: Melissa Olszewski, Secretary
3. Inspiration: Agie Connelly
4. Pledge of Allegiance: Ellen Lloyd
6. Approval of agenda for 2/17/16: motion to approve James Devine, 2nd by Gillian Warmkessel, unanimous 9-0.
7. Approval of minutes from 11/17/15 meeting with amendment to include the purchase of car rider line cones and paint : motion to approve Melissa Olszewski, 2nd by Ellen Lloyd, unanimous 9-0.
8. Principal’s Report:
A. GMAS – only 5th grade will be testing on-line. 4th grade to hand write due to on-line issues.
B. 5th Grade SpEd staff will be shadowed by Coastal SpEd staff on 2/22 and 2/29 to help with transition for SpEd students from Marshpoint to Coastal next year.
C. IB Re-evaluation document – we addressed all matters and were found to be satisfactory, and Marshpoint is in good standing with IB.
D. Revised bell times for 2016/2017 are 8:25am-3:10pm.
E.. Dr. Suess Book Week is first week in March. Decision to not collect $1 for Crazy Hair day and just have it be part of the daily activities planned.
F. Carson Mosley (student) has designed a mug that she is selling and will be donating some proceeds to Marshpoint PTA.
G. Marshpoint students will have a visit with Engineers from Thomas Hutton Engineering week of February 22.
H. New Hires at Marshpoint – Two new para-professionals, 1st grade SpEd (Mrs. McDougald) and 2nd/4th grade SpEd (Mrs. Usher). As of Feb. 29 we will also have a full time nurse, Amanda Eubanks.
I. Ms. Mahaney is starting a 4th grade Science Olympiad team.
9. PTA Update: Holly Adams/Agie Connelly
A. Book Fair happening week of Feb. 22
B. Recess bags were made for all classes to bring on playground.
C. Buddy Bench for Kinder is going to be implemented, also looking into other more permanent benches for other playgrounds. Looking for donations, etc.
D. PTA has some extra Scholastic money available that can be used to purchase items for teachers, particularly the rugs that are being asked for in the lower grades. Ms. Avendano to talk to teachers for ideas as to how to use.
E. Game Truck and Parties for WFC fundraiser is on Feb. 26
F. Reflections Update – Marshpoint took home more awards than any other school in Chatham County. We did not have any state winners this year.
G. Islands church donated a rolling shelf for the nurses office and Backpack Buddies.
10. Old / New Business:
A. Car Rider Line Update – New “No Cell Phone” signs, painted lines and volunteer patrol groups are being implemented.
B. Discussion about next year’s School Council members, will set up new members to attend the last meeting of the year.
