My Legal Practice Pty Ltd is a newly established legal practice which seeks to provide low cost legal services to clients across Victoria - with a social dividend. We are currently recruiting lawyers to provide general law advice and casework.

As an ethical company, My Law Practice seeks to be a model employer providing best practice systems and professional opportunities for its staff to encourage and support innovative service design and delivery to clients.

In addition, any profits made by My Law Practice will be re-invested into the charitable work of the practice’s parent organisation, CommUnity Plus.

Position Objective:

The General/ Criminal Lawyer, will undertake legal work with minimal supervision and demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence as a legal practitioner. The objective of this role is to deliver quality legal services to increase the revenue of the business.

Key Tasks
Casework and Legal Advice
  • Appear as an advocate in various courts and Children’s Court Criminal Division, Magistrates Court and Koori Courts in order to represent clients in a wide range of criminal, child protection, family violence, VOCAT and Infringements matters
  • Independently manage the files
Compliance, Risk and Accountability
  • Provide supervision and support to paralegal staff
  • Develop and manage procedures and process to ensure compliance with legal professional and ethical standards;
  • Maintain responsibility for the conduct and supervision of the legal practice in respect of legislative, risk management and quality requirements;
Budget Management
  • Billing and manage an effective fee structure to maximise profit from all practice work
  • Meet annual budgets
Business development and stakeholder engagement
  • Forge relationships within the legal sector and more broadly to promote the practice, its values and its areas of expertise
  • Explore innovative links with community and private organisations to develop referral processes
Other duties
  • Provide regular reports to Directors on progress in growing the business

Part C: Person Specification

Key Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated extensive casework experience in a range of matters relevant to the areas of work of the practice.
  • Minimum three/ five years post admission experience as a barrister or solicitor
  • Experience and understanding of the dynamics and demands of working within aprivate practice
  • Experience in Business development and successfully implementing a sustainable fee structure
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication and leadership skills, including conflict resolution, creativity in problem solving and the ability to lead a team
  • Highly developed stakeholder engagement and partnership building skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office and specialist legal software (LEAP) and experience in undertaking own administrative duties
  • Current practicing certificate, including authorisation to handle trust money

  • Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor

Mandatory : /
  • Current practicing certificate.

Other Information
Essential /
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Admitted or eligible admission as a legal practitioner in Victoria with at least 3 years post admission experience
  • Experience providing advice, information and/or casework in Criminal Law and General law
  • Competency supervising staff working in various areas of law.

Desirable /
  • Experience in private practice
  • Experience providing general legal advice
  • Practical experience in dealing with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Familiarity for LEAP database
