Airport Access Road Bridge Leads to Recognition for Beck & Bellucci, Inc.

Beck & Bellucci, Inc., located in Franklin, NH, received a Build NH Award from the Associated General Contractors of New Hampshire (AGC of NH) during the trade association’s annual Awards Banquet on June 9 at the Derryfield in Manchester, NH. The company earned the Best Highway/Bridge Project Award for completion of the Manchester Airport Access Road Bridge.

The Manchester Airport Access Road Bridge spans over the Merrimack River, the Pan Am Railroad, and Route 3A, and is 1,210 feet long. The bridge was completed in 2010, and is now New Hampshire’s fifth longest bridge. In addition to the bridge construction, the project involved roadway improvements to Route 3A and construction of a landscaped wildlife corridor connecting the wetlands east of Route 3A to the Merrimack River. The project encountered a number of challenges from the beginning. The water depth at this point in the river frequently fluctuates, meaning that it was too shallow to use a barge for construction, but too deep to construct a temporary stone causeway. The only remaining alternative was to construct a work trestle, which consisted of a 340 foot long main trestle with two 150 foot long fingers. The trestle was designed to support cranes weighing up to 300,000 pounds.

The project also had to contend with a number of environmental challenges. To protect the river from siltation caused by the drilling operations, steel casings were inserted into the river bed so that all drill cuttings could be captured and removed from the river. The project was completed at the time of the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and subsequently the bridge was named in memoriam of that day. Despite the numerous challenges faced during the project, it was completed on time and within budget.

The Build NH Awards recognize talent, commitment, and innovation in the commercial construction industry in four categories: Best Building Project, Best Environmental Building Project, Best Highway/Bridge Project, and Best Environmental Highway/Bridge Project.
