Speaker Bios

Laura Justice, PhD., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice directs the Preschool Language and Literacy Lab at Ohio State University where she holds faculty appointments at the rank of Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences and the School of Teaching and Learning. Dr. Justice's research activities have been supported by grants from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes of Health, and the U. S. Department of Education. Her research on early language and literacy has received awards from the International Reading Association, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (Editor's Award, American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology), and the Council for Exceptional Children (Early Career Publication Award). Dr. Justice is currently the Principal Investigator of three randomized clinical trials supported by the USDOE's Institute for Education Sciences that focus on preschool literacy and language acquisition, to include a field-initiated research grant, a preschool curriculum evaluation research grant, and a reading scale-up grant. She is Editor, EBP Briefs. She also is a volunteer speech-language pathologist with the Ukraine Special Needs Orphanages Fund.

Karen Erickson, Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies, a Professor in the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, and the Yoder Distinguished Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences, School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research addresses literacy assessment and instruction for struggling readers of all ages including those with significant disabilities. Karen is co-developer of the Tar Heel Reader online library of accessible books for beginning readers, as well as several other assistive and learning technologies. She is a former teacher of children with significant disabilities.

Nancy Helm-Estabrooks, Sc.D., CCC-SLP, is Professor Emeritus and former Brewer-Smith Distinguished Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at WesternCarolinaUniversity. She was affiliated with the Harold Goodglass Aphasia Research Center and Boston University School of Medicine for 32 years. She also held the positions of Research Scientist at the National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders, University of Arizona, and Research Professor at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) where she retains an adjunct research professor position. She is Board Certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders (ANCDS). Her awards include American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and ANCDS Honors. She is an ASHA Fellow. Dr. Helm-Estabrooks has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, seven books, 21 chapters and six standardized tests.

Perry Flynn, M.S., CCC-SLP, is the Consultant to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in the area of Speech-Language Pathology and an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is the vice Chair of ASHA's SLP Advisory Council, a certified Equestrian Therapist, the Director of the Equestrian Sport Development Team for Special Olympics North Carolina and an Operation Smile volunteer.
