This is a survey course for the non-science major. The principle human organ systems are studied according to structure and function. Problems of pollution, population control, and preservation of the natural environment will be discussed.

BOOKS

Required:

Human Biology, Sylvia Mader (10th Edition, 2007)

An earlier edition of the same book is acceptable as well.

EVALUATION AND GRADING

Midterm Examinations (5 X 100 = 500 points)

Midterm Examinations test the student on their knowledge of the lecture and reading material. Midterms are a usually consist of multiple choice questions and short answer questions and occasionally have fill-in-the-blank questions and matching. You need to bring a #2 pencil and scantron answer sheet (Form No. 882-E) to each exam. No make-up examinations will be given. Astudent who has an excused absence from one midterm examination will have the next midterm score counted as double.

Final Examination (200 points)

The final exam will be held on the last day of the class, which is:

Thursday, January 31, 2007.

The final is structured like a Midterm Examination.

It will cover all material covered in the course. Nomake-up Final Exam will be given. Therefore, schedule all future personal, family, and vacation plans accordingly.

Attendance/Participation

A score that evaluates in-class effort and a commitment to attending class will be given.
Coming to class more than 20 minutes late constitutes an absence. Coming to class after roll is taken constitutes a tardy. Three tardies are equal to one absence. This score is worth the same as a midterm and is easy to get, so don’t squander this “easy” 100 points by not coming to class or putting in the effort!!!

The total number of points and percentage of final grade follows:

EvaluationNumber XPointsTotalPercentage

Attendance/Participation 1100100~14%

Midterms 5 100500*~71%

OFFICE HOURS AND GETTING HELP

My office hours are Mon – Thurs after class from 10:30-11:00 AM. In addition, appointments to meet at other times may be arranged and are strongly encouraged. Do not be shy. I am here to help you learn the material and it is a joy for me to help students learn human biology. Do not leave any questions you may have unanswered. Talk to me if you have problems; REMEMBER, I am here to help! Good Luck!!!

GENERAL COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS

Read the textbook prior to attending the lecture!!!!!!!!! You will not remember it all the first time through. That is why I am here, to be your cruise director and guide! That is what lecture is meant to be! (1) Read text (2) attend lecture (3) study the textand lecture notes. I cannot learn the material for you. But I can sure help make sense of it all!!!

Come to class prepared! This cannot be overemphasized. It is essential for you to read the textbook prior to lectures. Lectures are intended to assist you in organizing and understanding material that can be detailed and complex. Becoming familiar with the vocabulary and the concepts will make the lectures much more interesting and instructional.

Do not fall behind! This is a fast-paced course that covers a lot of material in only 24 class meetings. Seek help before you begin to get in trouble. I am here to help you learn.

Work together! This is not a correspondence course. We get together 4 times each week so it is encouraged that classmates assist one another in learning the concepts. Come to class prepared to learn and seek the assistance of others.

Ask Questions! There is no such thing as a stupid question. The chance are that if you do not understand something, 80% of the class is sitting there as ignorant as you and is waiting for someone to ask. We have all been confused at some point; so speak up.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

Each student should purchase Scantron Answer Sheets for the Midterms and Final Exam.

PARTING COMMENTS/RULES

No late assignments will be accepted so do work when it is assigned!!!!!

Midterms and the Final CANNOT BE MADE UP. Do not forfeit points!!!!!

Eating, drinking, smoking is PROHIBITED in lecture. There will be breaks to accommodate your needs.

Please turn off your cell phones or set them to ring silently!!! I understand there are emergencies and so you have a cell phone (I have one as well!), but make sure it does NOT DISTURB the class!!!

Please clean up after yourself in lecture. Leaving the classroom dirty means that you are NOT participating as a proper student in the class and as such your attendance/participation points will be in jeopardy!!
