Pain Concern

Project Co-ordinator

Pain Concern, formed in 1995, works across UK to inform, empower and support people living with pain and those who care for them, whether family, friends or healthcare professionals. Chronic pain affects 7.8 million people in the UK. Numbers are rising and surveys show that chronic pain is more common now than it was 40 years ago. 49% of people with chronic pain experience depression and 16% of sufferers feel that their chronic pain is so bad that they want to die. 25% of sufferers lose their jobs and in the UK in 2010 £584 million was spent on prescriptions for pain. Muscle, bone and joint pain are the main causes of pain with back pain and osteoarthritis responsible for half of all cases. Chronic pain is not age specific – 11% of adults and 8% of young people experience severe pain.
