The Utah Conservation Corps (UCC) is an AmeriCorps program dedicated to developing conservation leaders through service and education and improving the quality of public lands through partnership projects. The UCC is committed to providing physically accessible conservation service opportunities, such as this Accessibility Survey Crew.

LOCATION: Crews based out of Cedar City, Utah (6 positions available)

Project sites throughout the Dixie National Forest

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The UCCAccessibility SurveyCrew Memberis an AmeriCorps position that works as part of a 4-person,mixed-ability crewthat will complete conservation service work on Utah public lands. The crew is assigned projects that are inclusive and physically accessible and accommodating to individuals with a variety of physical disabilities. Project work includes conducting accessibility surveys at US Forest Service sites and facilities in the Dixie National Forest.

The UCC Accessibility Survey Crew consists of the Crew Leader and three Crew Members. The leader and members participate in two weeks of training prior to project work where they will complete accessibility surveys of trails, campgrounds and facilities in the Dixie National Forest. The crew will take measurements, photos, and document data such as picnic table dimensions and trail width/slope according to ABA (Architectural Barriers Act) standards and enter survey data into a U.S. Forest Service database for use by the agency and the public.

The crew will camp near their weekly survey site. They will return to Cedar City for data entry days and for off-time between project weeks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to use various measurement tools to conduct on-site accessibility surveys of developed campgrounds, facilities, and trails within the National Forest
  • Accurately enter survey datainto the Forest Service database using IPADs and desktop computers
  • Ability to work outdoors up to 10 hours per day in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to function independently and provide personal care in outdoor and camp setting (using tents, living in campgrounds, camping for up to 5 nights in a row)
  • Ability and willingness to travel 4-6 hours driving to weekly project sites
  • Participate in group presentations to land managers and public officials on data collected

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Transport equipment and tools to and from project site
  • Conduct trail maintenance to make trails more accessible

PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be 17 years or older
  • Manage all personal care and mobility
  • Work successfully as part of a diverse team
  • Be outdoors for extended periods during the summer months
  • Successfully use computers and technology
  • Communicate clearly and consistently
  • Record accurate information and pay attention to detail
  • Travel in a UCC vehicle for up to 6 hours to/from job sites
  • Camp overnight with crew for up to 5 consecutive nights

Principal Working Relationships:

  • Work as a team with other crew members with and without disabilities to complete projects
  • Work in partnership with land management agency sponsors

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Graduate (minimum)
  • Strong Computer Skills
  • Camping Experience, desired not required
  • Strong Communication Skills

Service Conditions:

Accessibility surveys will be conducted outdoors on U.S. Forest Service land and data entry will be performed in an office setting.

Equipment Used: Smart Tool level*, inclinometer* (measures running slope), scale, IPAD, camera, GPS unit, roll-a-wheel* (measures longer distances), tape measure*

*These tools have been modified so that they are usable by people with a variety of physical disabilities.
