Lesson Structure: Centers

Mini-Lesson: (10 minutes)

Teaching Point: Today we are going to be talking about subtracting decimals. Play the adding and subtracting decimals song .

Active Engagement: Play the song a 2nd time. Have kids follow along with the song using a white board and marker.

Centers: (40 minutes)

Teacher Center:

Work on story problems that require subtracting decimals with groups. For an intervention group you can use visuals such as coins. There are many examples of this in the teachers’ manual. For a higher level group you can have a mistake and have the students find where the mistake was made or move onto multiplication and division problems with decimals.

Partner work: Have the students do page 45 and 46 of their student journals. Possibly have an answer key available for students to re-work any questions that they missed.

Compass Learning: Have the students go to their individual learning path for

Writing: Give the students the following problem.

Have the kids explain where the mistake(s) were made and explain what the student could do to correct the answer.

Share: Have students discuss any questions from the partner work center that gave them difficulty. What was the difficulty and how did you and your partner work through it.

Mini-Lesson: (10 minutes)

Teaching Point: Today we are going to be talking about subtracting decimals. Play the adding and subtracting decimals song .

Active Engagement: Play the song a 2nd time. Have kids follow along with the song using a white board and marker.

Investigation: (40 minutes): You will need a magazine for a store your students would like to shop.

Tell them, You are given $100 to spend how you would like. What would you buy? How much would you spend? How much change would you get back? (Don’t forget to add income tax at the end of your purchase.)

Have the kids make a poster to explain their thinking.

While the kids are working on their posters you are pulling small groups or individual conferences.

Wrap- Up: Have students share their posters. Have students explain any learning they had during the investigation.
