VOLUNTEER TRANSITION GUIDELINES

Being a transition home for a dog or cat is a very rewarding experience. Because of you a pet is given another chance to find a forever home. This may be the last chance for this pet. The majority of our transition pets just need more time to find a home. Some have medical situations such as heartworms, an injury or need some TLC. A transition pet can be in your home for a few days up to a couple months depending upon the needs of the pet. Each situation is different with its own set of individual needs.

Most of our transition pets receive their rabies vaccination and ID microchip before they go home. The exception to this might be due to a medical condition.

All of our transition pets are considered companion animals. Some of our pets might be shy, need to have some confidence building or simply did not show well in a kennel environment. We do not transition any pet that show aggressive behavior. The following are basic guidelines that apply to most transition situations.

As a Transition Home you are responsible for the SAFETY & CARE of this pet

All cats are indoor cats only.

All dogs are indoor dogs only. They are not allowed to be “outdoor dogs”.

All pets will be fed proper food and water based on the needs of the pet.

If a pet is under vet care, medical procedures will be followed at all times.

Pets are under your direct care and are not allowed to be under the care of anyone else.

A transition pet can visit potential approved adopters home under your supervision.

Transition pets cannot have a trial visit such as an overnight stay with a potential home.

Proper adoption procedures must be followed at all times.

All marketing communications or ideas must be approved by Terrie DiSalvo or Cathy Carr unless it is already an approved venue.

How to Get Your Transition Pet Adopted

With the first week take photos and write a story about your transition pet. Provide this information to Terrie DiSavlo and Cathy Carr.

Make sure they are on Petfinder website.

Make and distribute flyers using the approved template.

Attend off-site adoption events. Event information is emailed to all transition families.

Have your transition pet wear an “Adopt Me” jacket when out for walks.

Take your transition pet to animal related venues such as; Petco, Petsmart, local events or festivals.

Any unusual situation (injury, medical condition, lost pet) MUST be reported to Terrie DiSalvo or Cathy Carr IMMEDITELY. If a situation occurs and Terrie and/or Cathy are not contacted the pet will be removed from your care.
