A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Dr. H. Mac Vandiviere.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dr. H. Mac Vandiviere, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, H. Mac Vandiviere was born on March 26, 1921, a native of Dawsonville, Georgia, and longtime resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on March 1, 2004; and

WHEREAS, H. Mac Vandiviere was the loving son of the late Augustus "Gus" and Luna Castlebury Vandiviere; he was the devoted husband of Irene Melvin Vandiviere; he was the loving father of two sons, Chris Vandiviere of Harrodsburg and Martin Vandiviere of Lexington; he was the proud grandfather of Bryan, Tevis, Avivah, and Leandra; and he also leaves behind a loving sister, Jeanette Tift of Albany, Georgia, and two loving nephews, Maurice and Michael; and

WHEREAS, H. Mac Vandiviere received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from Mercer University, and he received his M.D. degree from the University of North Carolina; in 1962, he founded the Haitian-American Tuberculosis Institute and served as its Medical Director until 1972, and he also served as a Resident in Tropical Medicine at the St. Antoine Hospital in Haiti; his special post graduate studies included Parasitology, Enteric Bacteriology, and Tuberculosis by the CDC and USPHS, Radiology from Emory University, and Psychiatry from the University of North Carolina; he was the first physician to have joint appointments at the University of North Carolina and Duke University; and he received a Fellowship from the Department of Biology at the University of Michigan; and

WHEREAS, in 1967, Dr. Vandiviere came to Lexington as an Associate Professor of Community Medicine at the University of Kentucky, after which time he was appointed Professor of Community Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery; he served Kentucky Outreach Clinics for Respiratory Disease in Pike, Johnson, Magoffin, and Martin Counties, and in the Cumberland Valley, Buffalo Trace, and Lincoln Trail Area Development Districts; he retired from family practice in Lancaster in December 2002; he completed the Education for Ministries Course at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, which was given by the University of the South; and at the time of his passing, he held the prestigious position of Professor Emeritus at the University of Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, H. Mac Vandiviere served as Director of the Special Service Unit of the Georgia Department of Health; he was Consultant to the Battey State Tuberculosis Hospital from 1948 to 1951; he was a member of the Veterans, Army, Navy Subcommittee on Laboratory Diagnosis from 1952 to 1953; he was the Infectious Disease Consultant to the Sante Publique Department of Haiti, and consultant to the Presidents Public Advisory Committee in Haiti from 1964 to 1973; he was decorated by the President of Haiti on World Health Day 1963 for his Distinguished Service to Humanity in the Development of Community Health Programs; he was the Vice Chairman of the Kentucky Comprehensive Health Planning Committee in the study of tuberculosis from 1969 to 1973; he was the Consultant Director of the Division of Tuberculosis Control at the Kentucky State Department of Health from 1971 to 1972; he was President of the Kentucky Thoracic Society from 1971 to 1972; he was a member of the University Senate at the University of Kentucky from 1971 to 1972; he was the Director of the Division of Adult Remedial Services at the Bureau for Health Services in the Department for Human Resources from 1973 to 1976; he was the Director of the Division of Preventative Community Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine from 1981 to 1991; he was the Professor of the Division of Cardio Thoracic Surgery at the University of Kentucky from 1987 to 1991; he was Medical Education Specialist for SECID to the University of Sriwjaya School of Medicine in Palembang, Indonesia from 1988 to 1989; and he was a visiting Professor at the Siena College of Medicine in Siena, Italy in 1977; and

WHEREAS, H. Mac Vandiviere was President of the Kentucky Association of Pubic Health Physicians from 1973 to 1975; he was Chairman of the Fayette Medical Society Committee on Community Health and Comprehensive Care from 1975 to 1976; he was Chairman of the Bluegrass Council of the Ephraim McDowell Community Cancer Network from 1976 to 1978; he was President of the Community Hospice of Lexington Inc. from 1980 to 1981; he served on the Volunteers of America Board from 1980 to 1984; he was Chairman of the Children's Lung Disease Committee for the American Lung Association of Kentucky; he was Program co-chairman of the Southeast Tuberculosis Symposium from 1985 to 1986; he was President of the Board of Directors for the Bluegrass Mental Health/Mental Retardation from 1985 to 1987; he was President of the Board of St. Agnes House from 1985 to 1988; he was Medical Director of the Child Guidance Center from 1985 to 1988; he was President of the American Lung Association from 1990 to 1992; he was President and Founding Member of the Southern Association for Geriatric Medicine from 1992 to 1993; and during his career, Dr. Vandiviere authored in excess of 85 scientific publications; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Dr. H. Mac Vandiviere has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Dr. H. Mac Vandiviere, and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Dr. H. Mac Vandiviere.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Irene Melvin Vandiviere, 8 Deer Path, Lancaster, Kentucky 40444.
