RE: CRITERIA BULLETIN FOR LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

DATE: March 4, 2016

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL THE LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS:

ÿ  Read the Bulletin to see if you are eligible to apply for any scholarships. Go to the Scholarship Display in Guidance.

ÿ  Print your name on the outside of each scholarship folder in the scholarship display if you choose to apply.

ÿ  Take a “General Application” for scholarships 1 thru 26; complete the application and MAKE A COPY for each scholarship that requires a General Application. Write the name of the scholarship on the line at the top of the copy.

ÿ  Pick up any Supplements pertaining to the scholarships you are applying for * S means there is a supplemental form

ÿ  Gather information needed: 7th Semester Cumulative GPA, recommendations, family information, your high school activities and a letter of acceptance, if required. Transcripts, when required, will be attached by the Secretary.

ÿ  AH STUDENT AID FUND: MUST HAVE A 7TH Semester GPA of 85% or higher; Get the application on their website, ahsaf.org; Complete only 1 SAF application to be considered for all SAF scholarships.

All applications due in Guidance by March 24, 2016. No exceptions!

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY AND/OR DESCRIPTION

1. AH Civic League, Inc. Arts Scholarship A grant to a senior majoring in one of the Fine Arts including music, dance, film, theatre, radio, television, arts in education and design arts. S

2. AH Civic League, Inc. Education Scholarship Any Abington Heights senior who intends to enroll in a post secondary institution with a goal of furthering his/her education is eligible for the award. Applicants will be rated on apparent need, academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement. Highest consideration will be given to the need for financial aid. S

3. AH Education Association Memorial Scholarship Grants to seniors attending college upon graduation majoring in education. S

4. Edward R. Kairis Middle School PTA Leadership Scholarship A scholarship given to a former AH Middle School student with a high school cumulative GPA of 90% or greater, and planning to obtain 2 years or more of secondary education. Essay responses support leadership characteristics. Follow specific directions on AHMS PTA application. S

5. AH Youth Soccer League Scholarships: The Joe Bochicchio Memorial Scholarship & The John Foster Memorial Scholarship

Grants to seniors planning post high school education who participated in at least one season of Varsity Soccer and must have participated in the Abington Youth Soccer League Program. S

6. Schanbacher &Vozenelik Memorial Scholarship A Clarks Summit Elementary Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who attended CSE for at least 1 full year and has a 7th semester cumulative GPA of at least 90%. General Application, Supplement with essay and letter of reference required. S

7. Abington Lions Club Memorial Scholarship Grants to graduating seniors who have applied and been accepted at a technical school or college. The award is based on school activities, community service, scholastic achievement and need. SAR required. S

8. Dr. E. C. LaCoe Scholarship Two grants awarded to recipients who will have demonstrated academic achievement and/or honor student; good citizenship and service to others; leadership; evidence of interest in working with youth during high school career and matriculation in a secondary or elementary teaching program. S

9. Abington Sportsman’s Club - A grant awarded to 1 male and 1 female senior planning to attend college for

J. Owen Burkhart Memorial Scholarship a baccalaureate degree who has participated in varsity sports at least one season. S

10. Dulcey Degilio Memorial Scholarship A scholarship for a male or female senior having a GPA of “C” or better, be active in sports, be outgoing, happy and confident. Must show an interest in children or the elderly on your application. Financial need is not a criteria but may be considered in selection process. Applicants need to submit General Application, Transcript and supplement. S

11. Friends of Abington Heights Soccer A grant to a senior who has participated in soccer while in high school. Grant will be for one male and one female student. S Complete supplemental application only. The General Application is not needed.

12. Joseph W. Hall Memorial Auxiliary to the A scholarship for a students enrolling in an institution of higher education and a

Clarks Summit Fire Co. #1 volunteer member or auxiliary member in good standing. S The supplement is available at the Fire Hall.

13. Laura Lee DeFazio Morabito Scholarship A scholarship given to a female graduating senior with the following qualifications: GPA 74 or better; outgoing; happy; quiet confidence; not domineering; active in sports; honest; caring; trustworthy; unselfish; strong family values; no criminal/discipline record. Not need-based.

14. Lea D. Taylor Outstanding Cheerleading Scholarship A scholarship given to an outstanding senior AH cheerleader who participated in cheerleading throughout high school. The recipient will enroll in post-secondary education and have evidence of great character, leadership, involvement in school activities and Comet pride. Outside cheer activities will be a plus. A completed General Application and Supplement with a completed essay is required. Recommendations suggested, but are optional. S

15. Janet Rothenberg Memorial Scholarship A scholarship given to a graduating senior planning post high school education. The applicant must be a member of the National Honor Society and show involvement in school and /or community activities. Not strictly need-based.

16. Abington Junior Comet Scholarships: The Walt Weber Memorial Scholarship & The Dulcey Degilio Cheerleading Scholarship

Grants to a graduating male student who participated as a Jr. Comet Football player and to a female student who participated as a Jr. Comet Cheerleader. S

17. Waverly Lodge No. 301 Free and Accepted Scholarship to a graduating senior who has been involved in community

Masons Scholarship for Community Service service. The financial page of the application must be submitted. S

18. Waverly Woman's Club Scholarship A scholarship given to a senior planning post high school education. The award is based on leadership in school and community – not based on need. S

19. The Mark Pentasuglio Scholarship A scholarship for a senior student enrolling in an institution of higher education who has demonstrated leadership qualities in school or community and who has participated in sports, music or has been recognized for scholastic achievement. Financial need is not a criteria.

20. John Schumacher Memorial Scholarship The award for male or female based on student’s participation in the AH athletic program and their involvement in community service. Recipient does not have to be a varsity letter winner but must demonstrate an active involvement in the community. Essay required that describes involvement in the athletic program and active community service. S

21. Jerry Spear Odyssey of the Mind Scholarship Awarded to a senior who has participated in Odyssey of the Mind as a team member for at least 3 years, one which must have been in high school. The recipient will have demonstrated excellence in innovative problem solving as well as exceptional creativity, spontaneity, and the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to accomplish a goal. S

22. Kristyn Kromko Memorial Scholarship A scholarship for a male/female senior with the following qualifications – GPA 74 or better; outgoing, happy, confident, not domineering, active in sports, honest, caring, trustworthy, unselfish and strong family values. Applicants need to submit the General Application, Transcript and a response to 1 essay question from the Supplement. S

23. Ray Bennett Memorial Scholarship A scholarship given to a graduating senior who participated in wrestling or football at Abington Heights and is planning on participating in collegiate sports. S

24. The Classical Studies Scholarship A scholarship given to a graduating senior with a cumulative average above 85 and also planning to attend an accredited 4-yr college or university. Student must complete 1 college course in classical studies and show proof of completion with at least a B average. Special consideration to students who studied Latin and/or show active participation in the Latin Club. Completed Supplemental Application required. S

25. Blair E. Caboot Memorial Scholarship A scholarship to be awarded to a senior who is pursuing a college degree in the area of mathematics, mathematics education or other math-related field. A completed General Application, a transcript and an essay are required as stated in the Supplement. S

26. The Gary Steier Memorial Scholarship A former AH elementary teacher for 35 years and football/weightlifting coach, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is majoring in elementary education. Recipient should possess a passion to help others along with a creative spirit and have the desire to make a difference. Highest consideration will be given to the need for financial aid.

ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS

AH STUDENT AID FUND SCHOLARSHIPS Any student with a 7th Semester GPA of 85% or higher can apply for these scholarships by completing the STUDENT AID FUND APPLICATION. Only 1 application is needed to apply for ALL of the AHSAF scholarships.
