Background
BournemouthUniversity is a large organisation with approximately 1,400 staff and 17,000 students, divided between two main campuses. It enjoys a high quality environment within the setting of a bustling south coast resort. BournemouthUniversity recognises that its activities have an impact upon the environment at local, regional, national and global levels and acknowledges a responsibility for the protection of the environment and the health of its members and the community.
The Environment & Energy Team, based within Estates & IT Services, is currently working on a number of major projects including the implementation of the EcoCampus EMS, the implementation of a Carbon Management Plan following completion of the HE Carbon Management Programme, a major upgrade/replacement of Building Management Systems, the Student Switch-Off Campaign and a range of other projects to address our significant environmental impacts.
Objective
To assist with the implementation of the University’s Environmental Policy, Environmental Management System and Carbon Management Plan, contributing to the effective management of the University’s environmental aspects and impacts and raising awareness about environmental best practice across the University.
A key project for the CUSP graduate will be Staff and Student Engagement - particularly on carbon reduction and waste reduction - but they will also assist with the implementation of some major initiatives such as the Carbon Management Plan and EcoCampus Environmental Management System.

This role will offer the post-holder a greater understanding of environmental and sustainability issues and an opportunity to devise and follow through their solutions within a busy university.
The successful graduate will have opportunities to learn about being a team player, developing communication skills in different mediums and will gain project management skills including budgeting, planning, implementing and evaluating.
The post holder will be in regular contact with staff at all levels across the University and the Students’ Union as well as with students and external organisations, gaining experience in supporting and managing internal and external projects within the university.

Outputs and Key Tasks

Output 1
Assistance with the review, implementation and communication of the University’s Environmental Policy, and other environment-related policy documents.

Assistance with the implementation and operation of the EcoCampus Environmental Management System.

Assistance with the development of policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure continuous improvement in all areas of environmental management.
Output 4
Assistance in the improvement of energy efficiency at the University and the implementation of the University Carbon Management Plan and Energy Communications Plan.
Output 5
Design and delivery of environmental campaigns and coordination of the organisation of sustainability events, including events in support of national campaigns (e.g. Energy Saving Week, Fairtrade Fortnight etc) and internal events (e.g. Freshers’ Fair, etc).
Key Task 1
Assistance in the improvement of waste minimisation and recycling and raise awareness among staff and students.
Key Task 2
Assist in the delivery of the University Travel Plan, and raise awareness among staff and students.
Key Task 3
Assist with the process of responding to voluntary and mandatory reporting requirements.
Key Task 4
Contribute to environmental audits and reviews to support the monitoring of the University’s management of significant environmental aspects & impacts.
Key Task 5
Assist with the preparation of business cases for environment and energy related initiatives and projects.
Key Task 6
Contribute to accurate data collection, monitoring and reporting requirements.
Key Task 7
Administration of the Environmental Strategy Group, the sub groups on Travel, Carbon Management and Waste, and the Fair Trade Steering Group.
Key Task 8
Maintain and update the University’s Save Earth web pages.
Key Task 9
Communicate and advise on good environmental practice to staff and students.
Key Task 10
Research and identify opportunities to fund environmental projects from available external sources.
