I. PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

1. SportOutreach

The AAWA provides exposure and upgrading clinics to any Alberta school.

2. Camps

The AAWA runs the highly regarded Rocky Mt. Camp, as well as several other training camps

3. National Championships

Members wishing to participate in any of the National Championships must pay a $100 Wrestling Canada affiliation fee which will be collected by AAWA. This fee must be paid prior to participation in the event.

Note: Any Alberta athlete who wishes to to participate in any National Championship must have competed in the Alberta Open unless they have a medical or compelling reason as agreed upon by the Executive Committee.

4. Juvenile/Cadet Support

AAWA provides Provincial team programming for this age group.

5. High Performance

Team athletes are graded according to a ranking system. Each team receives a grant based on percentage of points as per the stated ranking tournaments.

The AAWA coordinates and subsidizes age group provincials.

II. RANKING SYSTEMS

(JUNE 1 – MAY 30)

All High Performance, Cadet & Juvenile ranking tournaments must use proper officials and submit correct results to the AAWA office in order to be counted.

  1. MALE HIGH

PERFORMANCE RANKING SYSTEM

Male high performance funds will be disbursed to the top 30 athletes’ clubs based on the following formula:

1)The top 10 placings will divide 50% of the money

2)The next 10 (11-20) placings will divide 30% of the money

3)The next 10 (21-30) placings will divide 20% of the money

Coaches who take their athletes to a tournament that they wish to use as a CAWA sanctioned international event, must provide complete official results including total numbers per weight class to the office.

B. MALE CADET/JUVENILE RANKING

Only Juvenile and Cadet aged athletes are eligible. There are no grants associated with this ranking.

All junior and senior high wrestlers who belong to both a school and club team must practice and compete with their school teams during the school’s season of play. Athletes may only compete for their club during this period of time if they have written permission from their school coach. If no school team is present, the athlete is free to choose the club of his/her choice. If an athlete chooses not to join his highschoolteam , he/she is ineligible to compete at ASAA sanctioned tournaments. Junior High athletes can attend and place at high school tournaments that are not sanctioned by the ASAA.

III. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF COACHES FOR A.A.W.A. TEAMS

1. Selection Procedures

A. Application Procedure:

All coaches interested in participating in any of the programs must apply in writing.

B. Evaluation and Selection Process:

The A.A.W.A Executive Committee at the first possible meeting will evaluate all applicants for the proposed program. The ranking system may be utilized.

C. Formal Appointments to Programs:

Coaches selected to the A.A.W.A. program will be notified as soon

as possible and must respond in writing accepting their appointment.

A substitute coach will also be selected.

D. Coaches shall be evaluated after each trip by the AAWA Executive.

2. Eligibility of a Coach

A. Is currently active as a coach.

B. Is a member in good standing of the A.A.W.A. Must sign and abide by the AAWA Code of Conduct.

C. Must have coached in Alberta at the level, or higher, of the majority of the team members for at least two years.

D. Have attained the necessary level of NCCP certification called for as stated in the event requirements.

E. Meet the following general guidelines of a wrestling coach.

3. Qualifications of a Provincial Team Wrestling Coach

(No priority listing)

A. Ability to communicate technically and socially with the athletes.

B. Ability to act as a goodwill ambassador for the Province of Alberta and the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association.

C. Past experience as a coach with athletes of the caliber that are selected to compete on the team.

D. Organization and administration experience as associated with being a wrestling coach.

E. Ability to organize and conduct practices.

F. Ability to organize and conduct training camps

G. Ability to analyze individual skills of wrestlers (strengths and weaknesses)

H. Ability to analyze draw sheets and communicate the information to athletes.

I. Working knowledge of the current rules.

J. Proficient level of wrestling skills and knowledge of holds and training techniques.

4. Duties

A. To conduct team practices.

B. To establish and enforce rules of conduct for the athletes.

C. To analyze each bout of an athlete and provide instant feedback to the athlete.

D. To scout future opponents of the team athletes.

E. To provide motivation and enthusiasm for the wrestlers; both for individuals and the team.

F. To provide a written report for the executive of the A.A.W.A. two weeks after each meet.

G. To attend all weigh-ins, coaches meetings and other meetings held at a wrestling meet.

H. To have an itinerary prepared two weeks in advance to a meet or at the time of the selection of the Provincial team.

IV. MASTER COACH AND OFFICIAL PROGRAM

1. Purpose

To promote and develop excellence in coaching and officiating in Alberta Wrestling by providing educational and coaching/officiating opportunities at

the national or international level

2. Funding

a) Individuals may apply for funds to cover expenses incurred in pursuing their Level III, IV, or V NCCP coaching certification.

b) Individuals may apply for funds to cover expenses incurred due to their participation in a recognized coaching clinic.

c) The AAWOA administers the Master Official portion of the funds.

3. Eligibility

The coach must meet provincial coach criteria as outlined in item II above. Provincial ranking and years of service will also be considered. Individuals may only receive funding once every three years so as to ensure everyone has an opportunity to access available funds. Coaches receiving funding from this program must provide a written report following the event.

4. Application

Interested coaches should write the AAWA at 11759 Groat Rd. Edmonton, AB T5M 3K6. The letter should include 1) a brief rationale and 2) details of the clinic/tournament the coach is interested in attending. Officials should apply to the AAWOA. The program is ongoing, hence there is no one deadline. Applications must be made ninety (90) days in advance of the event in question.

V. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF MANAGERS FOR A.A.W.A. TEAMS

1. Eligibility of a Manager

A. Be active in administration or officiating of wrestling in Alberta at either the Regional or Provincial Level for at least two years.

B. Be an active coach in Alberta for at least two years. Must sign and abide by the AAWA Code of Conduct.

C. Experienced officials may also serve in a managerial capacity. The manager must also meet the following general guidelines of a wrestling manager:

2. Qualifications of a Provincial Team Wrestling Manager

(No priority listing)

A. Ability to prepare budget and final financial statement

B. Ability to write reports

C. Ability to communicate directives to athletes and ensure that directives are completed.

3. Duties

A. To prepare an itinerary for the meet in cooperation with the team coach.

B. To handle all financial matters for the team competition.

C. To arrange all travel arrangements (to, during, and from the competition.)

D. To arrange all food arrangements for the athletes.

E. To arrange all accommodation arrangements for the athletes and team officials.

F. To keep statistics for the coach on the bout results and meet results for the individuals and the team.

G. To prepare and submit a written report to the Executive of the A.A.W.A. two weeks after each meet.

H. To handle all communication with the press, officials, athletes and A.A.W.A. officials.

I. To be responsible for audio visual equipment.

J. To be responsible for obtaining and returning uniforms and equipment for the athletes and team officials.

K. To publicize the results of the meet within twenty-four hours after the termination of the meet.

VII. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF WRESTLERS FOR A.A.W.A. TEAMS

COMPETING OUT-OF-PROVINCE

(OTHER THAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP)

1. Where practical, trials will be held for those wrestlers who qualify (age, weight, experience, etc.)

2. Where possible, wrestlers will be notified of the trials at least one (1) month prior to the event.

3. Where possible, one month notification will be given where there is a change in team selection criteria.

VIII. Provincial

Championship Bids

(Bids must be received by the AGM)

All A.A.W.A. member teams may bid for the Provincial Open, Elementary (2) or the Junior Olympic tournaments. The A.A.W.A. will subsidize officials’ costs and will provide medals at no cost to the host for the Alberta Open and Jr Olympics. A tournament grant will be given to the hosts of the Elementary tournaments.

Provincial Open weigh in will be conducted on site or at satellite sites as approved by the AAWA executive. A carded official or his designate will supervise weigh in.

There will be a 2kg-weight allowance for Provincial Senior and Junior Provincial tournaments.

The host will provide team awards for both genders at the Alberta Open and Team Awards for the Junior Olympics as well as pay all other expenses. The host will ensure a quality presentation and format befitting the staging of a Provincial Championship by complying with Item IX. Hosting a Provincially Sanctioned Tournament.

IX. LIST OF GUIDELINES FOR HOSTING A PROVINCIALLY SANCTIONED TOURNAMENT

Unless otherwise advertised, rules will be those of Wrestling Canada

1. Host club or school or association must be affiliated with the A.A.W.A.

2. Qualified medical staff must be present to inspect the wrestler for infectious diseases during weigh in.

3. Qualified medical personnel must be present during the tournament.

4. Officials will be assigned by the AAWOA.

5. All coaches will be properly dressed in the athlete’s corner. (Collared shirt, slacks or matching track suits. No jeans or t-shirts.)

6. There should be a roped off area for coaches, officials, active wrestlers and workers.

7. An appropriate awards ceremony will take place for successful wrestlers.

8. There will be a total of 30x30 space per mat.

9. A warm up area is to be provided.

10. A coaches/officials hospitality room is be provided.

11. There will be 1 drawmaster per 150 athletes.

12. Results (at least top six) must be sent to the AAWA office

X. DISCIPLINARY

ACTIONS

(In the event of a discrepancy the AAWA Bylaws will take precedence over this policy.

A complaint made by a member of the Association against another member of the Association must be made in writing, signed by the complainant with one copy sent to the alleged offender, one copy to the Association and one copy to the AAWA President within 90 days of the alleged offence accompanied by a $100 fee which will be refunded should the complaint be found to hold merit. Otherwise the funds will go to general revenue.

The President will inform, within 15 days of receiving the letter of complaint, the individual(s) cited that AAWA will conduct a review of the alleged offense. The President may then convene a review committee made up of the President, the Officials’ Representative, and the Coaches’ Representative. If the President is in a conflict of interest situation then the VP Technical shall sit on the committee. If either the Official or Coach Rep. is in a conflict of interest situation then a member at large shall sit on the committee.

The individual(s) cited will have 15 days from the date of notice of the review to provide to AAWA, in writing, any information to be considered.

If in the opinion of the Review Committee the allegations hold merit, the Review Committee shall bring their findings to the Executive where a Discipline Committee may be struck. The Discipline Committee shall be comprised of 3 members of the Association not in a conflict of interest situation regarding the pending case.

The Discipline Committee shall send a copy of the alleged infraction to all parties involved along with a notice of the place, day and time fixed for a hearing related to said charges. This notice shall be sent by registered mail 10 days in advance of the hearing. One advisor may accompany the defendant in the hearing.

The Executive will determine subsequent action. In the event of a decision to suspend or expel, the individual or group will have 30 days from the date of notification to personally appeal to the Executive Committee. There will be no further appeals.

All age categories are to be based on the calendar year. Weights listed are subject to change. Refer to the Wrestling Canada rulebook for current weights in the Senior, Junior, Juvenile and Cadet divisions.

All athletes Juvenile age and under must wear a mouth guard at all tournaments.

NCCP REQUIREMENTS

The 3M National Coaching Certification Program is a program designed to train and further educate coaches across the country. It provides coaches with a systematic way to improve their knowledge and skills in the theoretical, technical and practical aspects of coaching. To become certified at each level, coaches must complete all components of the program. While the AAWA encourages all coaches to obtain certification, coaches are required to have specific certification for some events. These certification requirements are as follows: (as of this printing)

Canadian Cadet/JuvenileChampionships (NCCP Competition Intro (Certified) Completed Evaluation and Online Ethics Evaluation – No NCCP Level 1 or 2 will be accepted.

Wrestling Canada Lutte

Any Alberta resident who wants to participate in Wrestling CanadaLutte meetings/championships or programs must be a member in good standing of the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association. A Wrestling Canada affiliation fee will be collected by AAWA and forwarded to Wrestling Canada.

Any Alberta resident seeking office in any Wrestling Canada general election must have the endorsement of the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association Executive.
