World History Enlightenment Timed Writing
You will write an in-class introductory paragraph on the most impactful Enlightenment thinker on the west. You will write in class on Wednesday, September 21st. You must use one of your documents to support your thesis and should also use information from your notes to support points you make. You will have 25 minutes to complete the assignment and should attach your DBQ packet after you are finished writing.
Prompt: Which Enlightenment thinker had the most significant impact on Western democracy?
FORMAT
Background Info/Context— Begin witha one to two sentences setting up the historical background of the essay, introducing the time and setting. (Discuss what life was like during this time period and how the Enlightenment began to change society).
Thesis Statement—Your main point/argument. It should be clear but not short and include key terms from the unit. A well-developed thesis statement will directly answer the prompt with three examples.
Three Subcategories/evidence—Three pieces of evidence that support your thesis. Each piece of evidence should have an explanation. (You must use at least one of your documents as evidence and should also use your notes)
Reminders: Avoid 1st person: I, me, my, our, we. Keep tone formal and avoid slang or informal language
- Make sure you stick to information in the date range (You are discussing the impact of one Enlightenment thinker – avoid other historical eras or thinkers not in your DBQ packet)
- Avoid a silly “hook” sentence or rhetorical question to begin your essay.
