Job Description
for 14-19 Science
Co-ordinator / A successful candidate would be expected to work with the Science team to lead learning & teaching through an exciting period of curriculum change at key stage 4 and key stage 5.
This would involve
- Monitoring teaching and learning at KS4&5 to ensure that the principles of the new curriculum are being incorporated into classroom action.
- Leading by example; demonstrating student initiated learning and assessment for learning principles in their own classes.
- Leading the department in continuing to develop new schemes of work in line with the 2016 9–1 KS4 curriculum changes.
- Developing progression pathways from KS4 to KS5 and beyond.
- Working with the Curriculum Leader to maintain high standards of learning within the department across all key stages.
Science Department / The Science Department at Fulston Manor School consists of six full time teachers. Accommodation is in eight purpose built laboratories, with support from an experienced team of three technicians. All of the laboratories have projectors and a sound system as well as whiteboards. We have a range of technology within the department including laptops, data logging equipment and Boardworks; consequentlya competency in ICT would be helpful.
The department aims to provide a broad and balanced, student centred science curriculum which embraces Assessment for Learning. The KS3 Scheme of Work consists of a two year course building on knowledge and the use and application of scientific skills in preparation for Key Stage 4. Its key focus is to encourage independent learning skills and self-evaluation, whilst developing an enthusiasm for science.
At KS4 students follow double award science (AQA Combined Trilogy). Students are offered Triple Award as an option (AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and are given additional lessons to complete the extension material. The KS4 Scheme of Work focuses on building a deep understanding of science. It encourages students to develop knowledge in science through opportunities for working scientifically.
At GCE the department offers a two year A-level AQA Biology and a two year A-level AQA Chemistry to provide a progression pathway for the triple award students and high achievers from the double award.
General Information / Fulston Manor is an extremely successful, non-selective school, with a current roll of 1283, which includes a rapidly growing sixth form of almost 300 and intense pressure for places in all other years. In addition to the school’s reputation for academic success and quality pastoral care, we are also involved in a significant amount of work with other schools, both providing intensive support and delivering a wide range of training opportunities. We have close links with local universities and are particularly proud of our staff induction programmes.
Having opened a new £3.7 million Mathematics and English block in 2014 and a similarly costed 6th Form Centre in 2016, plans have been approved for a larger Science and general teaching block, which would complete the regeneration of the site. These projects, along with the other high quality buildings, ensure that all staff teach within an outstanding learning environment.
As lead school within a multi academy trust, which includes a local primary school, there are numerous opportunities for staff to broaden their own professional experience and to seek career progression within the school. Many of our members of staff have achieved internal promotion and individually tailored development programmes ensure that appropriate training and support is provided for all. Everyone is encouraged to participate in whole school improvement work and we believe that this participation is a major factor in our continuing success.
This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
