Example of a Drama personal statement
I am currently studying a Btec National Diploma in Performing Arts at Stourbridge College. Drama has been a subject which I have always taken great interest in, the bright lights, the audience and of course, the theory of drama. For most people drama is just performance, and of course drama is about performing, but for me it's also about continuous learning. Being a drama student for the past year and a half has had a huge impact on my life. This is because the skills that I have been taught have stuck with me, and I use them from day to day. For example, I have learnt that time keeping is one of the most important skills to have in drama, you need to be on time for rehearsal else you either have your part changed or your completely cut out of the play. Not only is time keeping important as a group, but also as an individual, it is a big responsibility for yourself as an actor/actress if you want to make it anywhere in the performing arts business. I believe to be an actress, a producer, a director or be a part of the world of drama, you need to be organised. This is another one of the main skills I have worked on during my time at Stourbridge College. Of course drama involves a lot of team work, and having confidence and good communication skills has helped me to work even better in groups. At Stourbridge College, my group have been in bad situations where we have a performances coming up and someone doesn’t turn up during rehearsals, we have always worked it out as a group calmly with no arguments and on the night the performance has always ran smoothly.
Because I have such a passion for drama, I have always wanted to show people what it is about; therefore I believe I would be a great drama teacher. I have currently been accepted to gain work experience at Dudley performing arts every Saturday morning from 9:30am until 11:30am, to help out teach the theatre group ‘ ‘, which consists of people aged 6 to 16. I think this is going to be a great experience for me as I love to teach. I have had a small experience of teaching during my time at Stourbridge College when the year 1 class had started the course. During their first week, my group (the year 2's) were asked to plan a week's worth of lessons, and we all took it in turns to take charge per lesson. I put together a lesson plan and I made sure that the lesson was going to gain them anything. All of the lessons went really well and I believe that they all learnt something from them.
In my own personal time, I attend a theatre group called ‘Buzz’ which takes place every Monday evening from 6pm until 8pm at the Crestwood School. I believe this will gradually strengthen my skills as an actress from improvisation to stage presence and characterisation. I also enjoy play the guitar, any spare time I have, I try to improve my playing skills. I have had my guitar for around 2 years, but not that much time to play. I am more dedicated to college than my interests. Although I have a lot of work to do with college, I have a part time job at the retail store ‘Next’. I have worked there for 2 years and 3 months now, and I find that it is a good place to communicate with people.
