14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
To inspect, plan and coordinate the construction, remodeling, installation, maintenance and preventive maintenance of structural components, plumbing, electrical, electronic, grounds, mechanical (HVAC) and masonry components and equipment. This position is to comply with all applicable department policies, procedures, MIOSHA standards and laws while performing required duties. Instructs and supervises skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled prisoners in performing the above listed duties. This position utilizes and instructs lower level workers in the proper use of various tools to effectively accomplish these duties. Also follows, processes and monitors work requests and PM schedules. Develops material orders and specification as well as monitors material inventories. This position may be required to possess a certification in the application of pesticides with appropriate endorsements in compliance with the pesticide control act of 1976 and a valid Commercial Driver’s License as required by Public Act of 1988 and Department of Transportation Annual Medical Examiners Certification when driving state vehicles requiring CDL.

Duty 1

General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 70%
Work request and project assignments.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Provides daily constant supervision of all prisoners assigned to the positions crew. This position has direct contact with and may supervises prisoners more than 50% of the time. This duty includes the documentation of a 10 minute visual count of all prisoners on assignment. Provides safety and technical training to prisoners and lower level skilled and semi-skilled staff members.
·  To complete the tasks utilizing, supervising and training a prisoner crew. Perform tasks related to project and work requests in the construction, remodeling, maintenance, installation and preventive maintenance of structural components, plumbing, electrical, electronics, masonry, grounds, mechanical (heating, cooling, refrigeration) and equipment.

Duty 2

General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 20%
Documentation, shop duties.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Ordering and requesting supplies and materials needed for the job. Monitoring, processing and documenting prisoner payroll, tool requests, tool inventories and caustic/flammable inventories.

Duty 3

General Summary of Duty 3 % of Time 5%
Heavy equipment.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Operating and supervision of dump truck, aerial lift platform truck, fork lift, snow removal equipment and lawn care equipment. This duty may require the maintenance position to obtain, utilize and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License and Medical Examiners Certificate.

Duty 4

General Summary of Duty 4 % of Time 5%
Trades person assisting.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Assist licensed trades person in repair, installation and repair of electrical, plumbing, structural, electronic, masonry, grounds and mechanical equipment and systems.

18. What kind of physical effort do you use in your position? What environmental conditions are you physically exposed to in your position? Indicate the amount of time and intensity of each activity and condition. Refer to instructions on page 2.
Lifting, climbing, ladders, outdoor work during all weather conditions, working in confined spaced and at extended heights, approximately fifty (50) percent each day. Also in contact with and may supervise convicted felons over eight (80) percent each day.

Responsible to the Regional Physical Plant, Administrative Manager 14 to maintain and improve the physical plant within the Michigan Department of Corrections, Southern Region – Ionia Complex facilities.

EDUCATION:
Knowledge and skills typically acquired through the completion of high school.
EXPERIENCE:
Any maintenance or building trades experience of 2 years or more.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of occupational and safety standards, building construction and maintenance practices, estimating and budget practices, labor and personnel relations, state and local building codes; ability to supervise personnel, plan, organize and schedule work activities, read and interpret plans and specifications, communicate verbally and/or in writing, skilled in the use of problem solving techniques.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
May need to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 and Department of Transportation Annual Medical Examiners Certification when driving state vehicles requiring a CDL.
