PART 3

LOW POLY GAME SHIELD PART 3

CREATING A TEMPLATE IN 3Ds MAX

  1. Open 3Ds Max and open the shield file.
  2. Select the shield and add the Unwrap UVW modifier.
  3. You will create a template to use in Photoshop and use it as a guide for texturing your shield. Open the UV Editor. Right-click on the grid and select Render UVW Template:
  4. Render the UV Template and save it as a TIF Image file. Make sure you remember the name of the file and where you are saving it.

TEXTURING IN PHOTOSHOP

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop in your computer.
  2. Open the UV template that you have created from 3Ds max.
  3. Right-click the layer of the template and Layer From Background. Name the layer UV template and click ok.
  4. Create a new layer as shown:
  1. Rename the layer Gold.
  2. You will fill that layer with a gold color. To do this, Click Shift+F5. Set Use as Color and pick a gold color. Then click ok.
  3. Right now, you don’t see the gold color at all. To make the gold visible, click on the UV template layer and apply the Screen mode:
  4. So you won’t accidently move the UV template around, lock that layer by clicking on the lock icon:
  5. Go to texturemate.com and download a gray dirt texture. This is the texture I chose:
  1. Go to File>Open and open that texture you just downloaded. You will copy that dirt picture and add it as a layer on top of the Gold layer. First, select the dirt picture by clicking Ctrl+A. Then copy the picture by clicking Ctrl+C. Paste the picture on top of the Gold layer by clicking Ctrl+V. Rename the dirt layer “Dirt”. This is how your layers should look:
  2. The Dirt picture is too big so you will need to scale it down. Click Ctrl+T to bring up the Transform scale tool. Use your judgment and scale it down to about 30 percent.
  3. You will need to blend the dirt with the gold color. To do this, apply a Linear Light mode to the Dirt layer.
  4. You will be adding variety to the dirt by hiding and revealing some parts of it. To do this, you will use Layer Mask. Click on the dirt layer, and click the layer mask icon:
  5. Press b for the brush tool. Bring the brush size to 150 and hardness of the brush to 0:
  6. Set the foreground color of the brush to black. Black will hide parts of the dirt layer. Begin painting the layer mask with the black brush. You will only need dirt on certain areas of the shield to make it more realistic:
  7. Make the UV template layer invisible by clicking the layer visibility icon. You need to do this because you wouldn’t want the wireframe to appear on your texture:
  8. Click Ctrl+S to save your PSD file.

APPLYING THE TEXTURE IN 3DS MAX

  1. Open your shield 3ds max file and apply the texture that you just created in Photoshop into the color slot of the arch and design material.
  1. Render your shield again and save it as a jpeg file. Upload your finished work.
