Superintendent Cortines Updates-TheSuperintendent is very appreciative of what we do every day for students and of our academic gains. The governor will veto the QUIEA bill, but the $138 million lost will come from another funding source at the state level. $12 million was saved in canceling leases for offices this year. There will be additional RIF notices going out to Classified staff.

Use of Copier and Duplos–The copier is to be used for a few copies, the Duplos are for 20 copies or more. The Duplos are cost effective when you run 20 copies or more. The ink for the copier is expensive and when we go over the monthly limit we are charged $ .008 per copy and at this time we do not have funds in the budget for the overage.

Parent Volunteers- Refer parents who want to volunteer in the classroom to the office so they can complete the required volunteer application. Parents who have not been cleared by the Parent Involvement Unit cannot volunteer in the classroom. Please do not admit them into the classroom unless you are certain they have been cleared. Visitors will have yellow stickers and volunteers will have a round volunteer button. Parents here to observe can do so within a reasonable amount of time.

Open Enrollmentis scheduled to begin Sunday, November 1, 2009 and close on Sunday, November 22, 2009.Your Benefits Open Enrollment packet will be sent to yousoon. The packet will contain detailed information on all of the benefits plans offered by the District.As there have been many changes in the plans for the 2010 year, it is critical that you read allinformation in the packet and make your selections carefully.

Heartsaver First Aid/CPR Classes-are offered by the American Heart Association. The fee is only $1. Sign up through the Learning Zone under District Nursing Special Programs. Look for the Saturday courses

PERFECT ATTENDANCE - Please put a note in with your attendance cards every Friday morning when your class has had perfect attendance for the week. Three weeks of Perfect Attendance equals one hour of planning time for you and an ice cream treat for students!

Grants - The FEDCO Charitable Foundation is offering a grant to K/12 teachers. Grants range from $500 to $1,000 per teacher. Teachers may apply individually or collaborate with multiple teachers to submit a joint application for a grant award of up to $2000. The deadline to apply is October 16, 2009.

The Riordan Foundation is offering SMART classroom technology grants, including projectors and interactive SmartBoards. Information is available at

Math Updates-The Princeton review is now CORE K12 and the new website is . Please save this website so you can enter your students’ quarterly math scores if necessary. For information, research, and updates about math instruction, visit and the new MIG is aligned with the enVision math series and is available for download at 4th and 5th grade students must use answer sheets for quarterly assessments-do not allow students to write in test booklets.

OCR Updates- All resources (fluency norms, SOAR reporting dates, pacing plans, and student answer sheets) are posted on the LD3 website at 4th and 5th grade students must use answer sheets for periodic assessments-do not allow students to write in test booklets.

English Language Learners- Thank you for returning the signed Annual Assessment Results letter sent home to students who took the CELDT last year. As the signed letters return, just put them in my mailbox and I will file them in the blue Master Plan folder in the student’s cum. I will continue administering the CELDT on Monday, October 5th. I will begin by giving the 2nd grade group tests. When I am here, I will pull students for the sections that need to be given individually.
