Dear E.E.F. list members,

GlyphStudy, a FREE, student run Yahoogroup for the study of Middle Egyptian,

will offer a new Allen study section beginning Monday, 17th February 2014.

YOU WILL NEED TO JOIN GLYPHSTUDY IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE.

YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO INCLUDE A FIRST AND LAST NAME WHEN YOU APPLY--SEND THAT INFORMATION TO KAREN, SEE BELOW, AS WE MIGHT NOT SPOT YOU IF YOU JUST APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE LIST.

TEXTBOOK

We will be using James Allen’s Middle Egyptian: An Introduction to the Language and Culture of Hieroglyphs, published by Cambridge University Press, as our textbook.

YOU WILL NEED TO OWN A TEXTBOOK IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE.

EDITION

Any edition from 2001 to 2010 will be OK (you can even get away with using the 2000 edition,) but be advised that there is a long list of errata for the 2000 edition up in the Files section at the main GlyphStudy list).

The most recent edition, published in the UK in 2010, contains a few corrections and some additional comments to the answers in the back of the book, but we haven’t spotted any significant differences in the text.

There are, however, differences in the texts with respect to the homework problems. The 2010 edition contains a few problems that were not present in previous editions and it omits some exercises that were—so the exercise numbers do not always agree. But we can accommodate this.

So, although the 2010 edition is preferable, there is no need to purchase a new copy of Allen, if you already own another edition.

TIME FRAME FOR THE SECTION

It is expected that it will take just under 2.5 years to complete Allen.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT

A word about Allen, this is a comprehensive grammar book and requires some serious study – you will need to set aside several hours per week and, preferably (although not

absolutely necessary), be prepared to commit yourself to submitting homework.

You need not have studied hieroglyphs before.

DUE DATE FOR 1ST ASSIGNMENT

The first homework assignment for the Allen 2014 section will not be due until Chapter 3, and I will not be inviting people to join the separate Allen14 Homework list at Yahoo Groups until mid-February, which will give you a few weeks in order to decide whether or not Allen is for you. So, at the moment, we are just collecting the names of anyone who wants to start reading Allen without committing themselves further.

SUBMIT BOTH A FIRST AND LAST NAME,AND INDICATE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ALLEN 2014 SECTION

STUDY RESOURCES

While you are waiting for the section to start, you should begin looking at the resources materials we have up for Allen.

Due to limited space they are now housed on a separate Yahoo Group website:

Since this list was set up to house resources only, memberships are set to Special Notices, and students won’t receive emails from the list unless a moderator has an announcement to make.

PLEASE GO TO THIS SITE AND APPLY TO JOIN - JUST PUT YOUR FULL

NAME AND ALLEN 2014 IN THE COMMENTS BOX.

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

You will find a collection of resources, including a brief story, some online drills, and a few other visual aids to help you memorize the basic glyphs in their proper order, on the main GlyphStudy website.

Make sure to print out a copy of Jim Kuikman’s chart and have a look at the online drills.

Students who have not had any hieroglyphs before might want to get a head start by learning the Middle Egyptian alphabet.
