MSUTeach Advising Summary

This document describes the MSUTeach Track and teacher certificationcoursework and other requirements. This is to be used as a guide only. Please meet with your advisor to be certain all requirements are met on time.

There is an MSUTeach Track in the following areas: biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, physics, and in the mathematics major. The mathematics major requires a minor in addition to the major and MSUTeach coursework. If you are not in one of these six programs with an MSUTeach Track, you can still try out teaching by enrolling in UTCH 100.The required content coursework for each content area or major is described in the College of Science section of the MSU catalog under its respective program.

Suggested Course Pathways

Students may begin MSUTeach coursework in any of the five semesters below. Check your curriculum map for variations due to scheduling of required content courses not offered every semester. Community college transfer students should follow the entry in Fall of Junior year pathway.

Students must meet the following requirements for entry into Teacher Education Program and to enroll in UTCH 300: Classroom Interactions:

Check or date when completed.
  1. Successfully completed ENG 100, COMS 108, GenEd Math, UTCH 100, 150, 200 with a grade of "C" or better.

  1. Check for enrollment in Teacher Education Program Blackboard course enabling you to receive important teacher preparation announcements, access Ethics quiz, and Praxis information, application, etc.

  1. Visit Ginger Hall 100 to read and sign to acknowledge the Morehead State University Disposition policy.

  1. Pass Praxis I exams before entry into UTCH 300. Praxis exam information can be obtained at Plan ahead. Take the Praxis I during your UTCH 250 semester or before.

  1. Have an active Folio 180 account before entry into UTCH 300: Classroom Interactions.

  1. Earned a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better and a GPA of 2.75 or better in completed content courses or have the permission of the MSUTeach Co-directors.

  1. Successfully completed the College of Education Code of Ethics quiz. Shortly after your registration in UTCH 300, you will be enrolled in College of Education Blackboard site. Study and then take and pass the Code of Ethics quiz.

Students must meet the following requirements toenroll in UTCH450: Apprentice Teaching (AT):

  1. Complete Promoting Positive Behavior module, evidenced by official certificate for each academic year with field hours.

  1. Must have dispositions on file for every course with field hours. Scores must be 3 or better on all items on the final semester of dispositions filed prior to UTCH 450.

  1. Completed all MSUTeach (except UTCH 450) coursework with a grade of "C" or better.

  1. Completed required clinical experience hours in all needed categories, entered them in KFETS, Folio 180, and have written documentation. (Screen shot of KFETS must be submitted to Assessment Administrator & MSUTeach advisor.)

  1. Completed more than 75% of all coursework and 75% of content core coursework (MSUTeach highly recommends completion of more than 85% of all coursework and 85% of content coursework).

  1. Applied for Apprentice Teaching on TEP Blackboard before the end of the third week of the semester prior to Apprentice Teaching for Fall Apprentice Teaching, and August for Spring Apprentice Teaching.

  1. Submitted MSUTeach Preliminary Portfolio by April 1 for Fall Apprentice Teaching or by November 1 for Spring Apprentice Teaching.

  1. A criminal background check receipt MUST be on file with the Assessment Administrator by April for Fall AT and November for Spring AT. Districts will not accept a background check older than six months, plan carefully.

  1. As of July 2018, child abuse and neglect (CAN) check MUSTbe on file with the Assessment Administrator. The form will be provided at your meeting with the Assessment Administrator following your application to. Cost is $10.

  1. Earned a GPA of 2.75 (on a 4-point scale, no rounding up) for each of the following:

  1. Cumulative - all coursework (including transfer credit)

  1. All course work completed at Morehead State University

  1. All content coursework in major or area

  1. All MSUTeach courses

Candidate must have a content major or area for which Kentucky grants teacher certification. If your area or major is not biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, or physics, please meet with an MSUTeach Co-Director, some related areas may qualify you if you will have 40 or more credit hours in the content of the certification being sought and meet all MSUTeach requirements and pass the required Praxis exams for certification.
  1. Filed the results of a current physical examination including a TB risk assessment. Candidate must use the Medical History Form provided at:

  1. If required by the school district, candidate must follow procedures for completing a drug screening.

Scholarships available to MSUTeach students

  1. Reimbursable Scholarship: Upon successful completion of UTCH 100, and/or UTCH 150 with a grade of “C” or better, students are eligible for reimbursement of one credit hour in-state tuition as allowable per individual financial aid package.
  2. Sara Lane Volgenau Scholarship:Scholarship of up to $2000/year available after successful completion of UTCH 100, 150, and 200 andpassing Praxis I exam before accepting the award. Student must be enrolled in a UTCH course during the semesters the scholarship is awarded and have a GPA of 2.8 or greater. Applications available on MSU’s scholarship site.
  3. Noyce Scholarship:Scholarshipof up to $10,000/year for MSUTeachjuniors and seniors with a GPA of 2.8 or greater in completed UTCH courses andin completed content courses. Applications available on MSU’s scholarship site.

Licensure:Praxis II must be taken and passed beforeMSU can recommend a candidate to the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) for certification. Additional information can be found at and on the EPSB website.
