For the Rose Circle, the designer took inspiration from historic California gardens. Mediterranean plants are used in a “Jekyllesque” approach, i.e. drifts of overlapping perennials with colors that are various shades and tints of reds, red-violets and deep pinks. The perennials not only complement the reds of the existing roses, they are also full enough to hide the roses’ “knees.” Recycled cement is used to create “crazy paving” – a flagstone type look – with creeping thyme in between.

The Circle Terrace is an intimate area off the main house where a couple can relax with a bottle of wine next to a small fire while they take in the view of the San Gabriel Mountains.

We are taking our inspiration from the circular shape of the Terrace. The centerpiece is a round coffee table with a built-in fire pit, which will be planted with Euphorbia “Sticks on Fire” to suggest a warm fire. When not in use, the fire pit can be covered to become a flat surface. Two chairs, ottomans and side tables will be placed around the coffee table. Custom cushions will be made from Sunbrella fabric in a botanical print with citrus-colored accents.

The Circle Terrace is flanked by two formal columns that will be decorated with sculptural plants in glazed terra cotta containers arranged symmetrically to enhance the formality of the columns. Sculptural plants include Mexican Grass Tree and Weeping Atlas Cedar.

Three circular pendant lights will be hung from the tree that sits in the adjacent terrace providing a focal point and casting ambient light.

The Pool Kitchen and Bar is a space for year-round living - an extension of the indoors...outside. The area was unified by designing a wooden arbor on both sides of the colonnade to unite the top, while constructing a deck from eco-friendly Trex to create one level on the bottom.
The designers created an area where a family could not only prepare an outdoor meal, but also entertain friends while watching a sports event, sit by a fire and sip cocktails, or share a gourmet feast - al fresco. This was accomplished by adding the warmth of a fireplace from Lennox Hearth - both beautiful and functional, while being energy efficient and again, eco-friendly. The Sunbrite TV allows for viewing perfection with its exceptional resolution. The kitchen and bar area were given a personal touch when the owners were invited to select a favorite scenic memory from their travels to be painted as the mural behind the bar. The look was completed with a counter and bartop fabricated from one of the newest Caesarstone quartz colors.
A desire for serenity, nature, and harmony with the design of the house dictated the soft color palette of greens, browns and beiges and inspired the mix of iron, teak, ceramic, stone, glass and sea grass in the furnishings and accessories. The final touch is the surrounding plants and potted vines which will create a living canopy to this refreshing space, while adding some welcome relief to all of the surrounding hard surfaces. Enjoying the beauty of nature while dining, entertaining and relaxing, this outdoor living space of the home will always be occupied.

This doesn’t look like a desert at all! These are native and low-water plants, with a lush and rich appearance. Away with the stereotypes of “drought-tolerant” gardens. Feast your eyes on this sustainable ecosystem – inviting for humans, nature, energy efficient and water saving.

FormLA’s (formerly C & K Landscape Design, Inc.) commitment to designing, installing and maintaining landscapes that reduce everyone’s carbon footprint. From source purchasing, to organic materials, sustainable intrinsic practices, implementation and product selection, FormLA is defining how landscaping needs to be approached.

How about practicalities? Most definitely! This garden is designed to bridge the gap between the formal home and the active area below at the tennis court. It’s a transition that offers fragrance, beauty, nature, a place to watch your competitors and plan your strategy on the tennis court.

There will be a new grand stairway centered on the garden with a central retreat composed of decomposed granite, providing a permeable paving for housing a hammock and lounge furniture. It’s a perfect spot to breathe fresh air or watch your friends practice their serve. Adorned with architectural ornaments, magic mushrooms, antique lanterns, large iron plant stands for hanging baskets and a native dry river garden that ties it all together, this space becomes the favorite of them all!

The space features LED landscape lighting, a first for Showcase. Beautiful moonlighting, up lights and path lights will be incorporated that use only 20% of the energy compared with low-voltage lighting.

Low-flow, cutting-edge irrigation will be installed to save 50% or more water in a space that covers 7,600 square feet, almost ¼ of an acre. Long-term maintenance reduction is a saver, too.

Lastly, using native plants will attract birds, bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects that rely on specific species of plants that are becoming scarce.
