Your horse’s good health is our #1 priority!
This month we want to emphasize to you the importance of preventive healthcare. In veterinary medicine, as in human medicine, it is much easier to prevent health problems than to treat them once they occur. In this newsletter we have provided, in a printable format, the Central Georgia Equine Services, Inc. recommended vaccination and deworming schedule for show and pleasure horses and for newborn foals.

PREVENTICARE
An Alternative to Rotational Deworming is Strongid C2X!
Strongid C is a daily deworming product manufactured by Pfizer. The Strongid C is given to your horse once daily with either the morning or evening feeding. This once daily feed additive is easy to remember and convenient to use. The active ingredients in the Strongid C are formulated into an alfalfa base. Most horses will readily eat the Strongid C in their grain ration.
To back up their claim that use of Strongid C2X will help keep your horse healthy, Pfizer has developed a program called “Preventicare”. Preventicare is an equine wellness program that we at CGES participate in and promote vigorously.
Preventicare is a program designed to promote prevention of treatable conditions in your horse. To be enrolled in the Preventicare program, your horse receives an annual physical exam, appropriate dental exams and care as needed, vaccines appropriate for your horse’s lifestyle, nutritional counseling. Your horse must receive Strongid C every day and must be treated with Equell or Equimax twice a year.
So now you must be asking, what are the benefits of the Preventicare program? The benefits are extensive.
With an annual physical exam, your veterinarian is more likely to identify small problems before they become large problems. Also, by examining your horse once a year and keeping in contact with you, the horse owner, your veterinarian will have a closer relationship and partnership with you, allowing the two of you to work closely together to keep your horse in tip-top shape!
By using the daily dewormer, there are no worries that you may have forgotten to give the paste dewormer at the appropriate time, leading to a parasite free horse!
And one of the biggest benefits:
If you have enrolled your horse in the Preventicare program and have kept up with the daily Strongid C, twice yearly Equell or Equimax, and yearly physical exams, and your horse colics and has to have surgery, Pfizer will reimburse you for the cost of surgery up to $5000. With the emphasis on preventative health care and maintenance, the chances of your horse maintaining good health and condition are increased, therefore decreasing your chance of a life-threatening colic episode.
Here at CGES, we feel that if your are committed to providing the utmost care for your horses and are willing to enroll in a wellness program such as Preventicare, you deserve a reward. We offer all of our clients whose horses are enrolled in Preventicare a 5% discount on all veterinary products and services, including emergency visits. This is how excited we are about getting your horse enrolled in a wellness program.
The Strongid C comes in two convenient sizes. It is available in a 10 pound pail and a 50 pound bag. The 50 pound bag is very convenient if you have multiple horses enrolled in the Preventicare program.
If you have any questions about enrolling your horse in the Preventicare program please call the office at (478) 825-1981. You can also visit Pfizer’s website:
