NYSFAAA Region VIII Meeting Minutes

SUNY Canton

September 14, 2007

The meeting began at 10:15 am:

  1. Treasurers’ Report – Suzanne Davis will be stepping down as Treasurer. Thanks to Jim Vallee for filling in. There was some discussion if account needed to be changed from HSBC but Jim is close to branches so account will remain at HSBC.
  2. Review of Minutes – Kerry Lubold moved to have the minutes approved. Carolyn Corcoran seconded. Thanks to Carolyn for taking notes last meeting.
  3. HESC Update – Bonnie Evans provided the HESC update which included the upcoming Loan Symposium, Digital Dashboard, Default Manger update and credit check enhancements to come.
  4. Membership – Bonnie provided a membership update. According to records for 06-07, there were 121 members. Currently there are 33 members registered for new year. Please remember to renew your membership if you have not done so.
  5. Development Update – April gave the Development Update on behalf of Katrina. The 07-08 on-line Support Form for NYSFAAA is available. Sponsorship is down compared to last year. Katrina will be reaching out to vendors for their support as training is a crucial part to the organization.
  6. Executive Council Update – Kerry wanted to address the changes in the leadership of NYSFAAA. There are a number of new executive council reps for the Regions. If anyone has any concerns or issues, please address them with Kerry. This year’s audit was successful. The main issue was invoices. Please submit originals instead of copies. NYSFAAA leaders and NY Department of Education are looking to clarify some of the gray areas of SLATE. If you have any questions or concerns, please send to Heather. Kerry also shared updates on the Scholarship Committee and their golf event at the conference. Any items for the Fall newsletter need to be submitted to Laura Worley by September 25hth.
  7. School Counselor Workshop: Kerry said that both workshop locations have been scheduled. JCC will host on 12/2 and Lake Placid on 12/5. She is looking for volunteers to present and work the registration table. Lenders are able to participate but may not bring any literature to display. They also may not wear any logo apparel and identification affiliating them as educational lending.
  8. Training – Pat Farmer was not present at the meeting. Jim Vallee will be doing a presentation at the next region meeting.
  9. Early Awareness – Anne Barton said that the NY State Fair was a great success. NYSFAAA raffled off 3 IPOD Nanos. They will be contacting the counselors at the schools where the winners attend. Anne said the brochures were very popular with the teachers. Anne stated that if any schools are interested in brochures please let her know.
  10. College Goal Sunday –Carolyn said that there is a meeting on September 28th in NYC to discuss the upcoming day. This year it will be held February 10th. It was determined that Watertown would be a good site for Region 8 based on the need. Carolyn will get in touch with JCC to discuss options.
  11. Holiday Meeting – Jean passed around a list of people who have signed up for the meeting. Please add your name to the list if it is missing and you would like to attend. This year there will be no contracts as an organization so you will each need to fill out an individual l form. Please make reservations by November 7th. April will coordinate afternoon meeting with Lake Placid Resort
  12. Updates –Anne Barton shared information on NSLP training opportunities. Anne Del Plato addressed some of the changes occurring at Nelnet. Charlie Boland said things are still business as usual at Bank of America and the deal with Sallie Mae is still moving along. Jim Valle affirmed M&T’s dedication to the industry and Karen Blankenburg stressed Wachovia is still standing strong. Vince Scalise addressed the merger of Student Capital with CLC and the effects it has had on staff. Amanda Earnshaw announced KeyBank acquired Tuition Management Systems. Kerrie Cooper introduced Heather Adner who has joined their staff from SUNY Plattsburgh and Ronda Curtis is still at Canton.
