JOB PURPOSE (A Summary)

To deliver equine care through your horse and donkey knowledge ensuring that our Norfolk farms are managed effectively using the management and support teams at each site.

To support the Norfolkequine centre managers ensuring that the Norfolk farms work as a team - acknowledging their similarities but different needs. To liaise on veterinary matters as needed.

To monitor day to day operations of the Norfolk farms and the resources needed and utilised.

To use your horse knowledge to run the checker training programme, ensuring that all farms have an appropriate level of checkers to the volume of horses. Support key colleagues through being a member of the Internal Welfare Group (IWG).

To manage the professional drivers who use the HGVs and provide internal and external transportation.

To manage the Land Management Operative and ensure land tasks are working to an agreed plan and reported accordingly. Liaising with chosen contractors on servicing and using our Norfolk farms land.

Duties and Responsibilities

Management and supervisory

To line manage Norfolk Equine Centre Managers, professional drivers and land management operative, including monitoring their resource allocation. To ensure they have the tools to schedule their work efficientlyand that their farms are run to a high standard of care and are working to Redwings recommended and statutory procedures, operating procedures and practices in a knowledgeable manner.

To liaise with the Operations Manager when implementing plans for future rehoming of equines at Norfolk farms.

To demonstrate hands-on knowledge of the Norfolk farms day to day work and ‘walks and talks’ assessing the condition of horses in the managers’ day to day care.

To lead on the recruitment ofNorfolk farm staff including interview, assessment and selection.To support the managers should there be a shortfall in one farm that needs filling.To lead on second-level certain staff management matters in conjunction with HR.

To manage pre-allocated budgets that relate to the specific needs of the Norfolk farms to an intermediate signing authority limit.

To attend and contribute to meetings, including the Internal Welfare Group (IWG).

Documentation and Recording / procedures

To work with the Internal Welfare Coordinator to ensure that procedures are in place that record:daily horse movements, worming, foot trimming, shoeing, vaccinations, dental, veterinary clinical treatment notes, horse ailments and medications, and behavioural problems.

To lead the managers in the maintenance of accurate and comprehensive equine care records, in particular those relating to potential prosecution cases.

Equine management

To manage the standards of checking and horse care work with the Senior Assistant Veterinary Surgeon running an informative and relevant checkers training programme.

To ensure that services and approaches of the Norfolk farms are in accordance with Redwings Vision & Values, our Standard Operating Procedures and our Managers’ Manual. To lead on the delivery of a positive Health & Safety culture using the procedures and documentation in place.

To lead on admissions spaces on the Norfolk farms for both planned and emergencies.

Supplies and (identified) contracts of work

In accordance with the Working Ethically Policy to review and manage the contracts and stocks, as well as ensuring delivery systems are in place for Farriery and Forage Production*.

Horse movements

To liaise with the vet team, rehoming team, welfare team and reception in order to manage the professional drivers in accordance with statutory procedures from the Transport Manager.

To liaise with Welfare over external needs and ensure that this resource is being managed effectively.

Land Management

To lead on muck management including liaising with local farmers.

Working to an agreed plan from the CEO Department to ensure that land management tasks are delivered using either in-house staff or contractors.

To line manage the Land Management Operative and his resources for tasks including internal movements such as hay, as well as servicing tasks on our land. To ensure that key tasks are recorded on our database ‘Gatekeeper’.

Equipment management

To ensure the managers keep track and good care of their equipment(as determined by the Asset Register) specific to the equine care needs of the Norfolk farms.

Other /general

To work smartly and effectively using IT and systems, focusing our resources on service delivery of Norfolk care.

To work as part of the Redwings management team at our special events such as ‘open weekends’.

To embrace any new duties that clearly fall within the remit of this role and to carry out other duties as may, from time to time, be required by Redwings.

NOTES

Education/
Qualifications / Broad experience in an equine management environment.
Minimum qualification required BHS Stable Managers Certificate or equivalent. / Formal / Professional Qualifications in horse care or equine Management
Experience / Proven experience of working for a similar organisation specialising in equine care.
Experience of managing and developing a team, decision-making and monitoring resources.
Ability to work within a team and manage budgets.
Effective communication. / Hands on management experience within a horse care environment
Skills/
Knowledge / Ability to prioritise and to make informed decisions, innovative problem solver, able to identify areas for improvement and create ideas.
Attention to detail.
Managing change and influencing others to embrace change.
Equine acumen, good knowledge of Equine health and welfare.
